"A fine enthusiast car in a very well-restored and road-ready condition."

Description

The Midget was purchased in 1990 by its then-owner. Now, following the owner's passing, the Midget is set to be auctioned by the estate. When purchased, it was in very poor condition, so a comprehensive restoration was initiated almost immediately. This restoration was extensive and was documented with regular photography over the nearly eight years it took to restore the car to its former glory. There are over 100 photos detailing every part of the renovation. A binder containing these photos will accompany the car, and some examples from it can be seen on the page here. Another binder with additional documentation, including receipts, inspection reports, and a Heritage certificate, will also be included. The car was disassembled down to its components, and everything needing attention was addressed. The engine was overhauled, the body was professionally welded and painted, and the upholstery was replaced with new, original-spec materials. The MG was inspected after the renovation, completed in 1999, and the car remains almost entirely in its original condition today. It was used sporadically for a few years but has seen little use in recent years.

It will be started up and MOT:ed before the sale.

Facts about the model

The model is based on the Austin Healey Sprite (frog eye) from the late 1950s. At that time, BMC was in the process of rationalizing its model lineup by using common bodies and components across the board. As a result, the Sprite now received a twin model in the form of the MG Midget, identical except for the radiator grille and chrome strips on the sides and hood. The interiors differ in some details such as seat upholstery and instruments. In the Sprite, instruments from Smith were installed, while in the Midget they were from Jäger (although also made by Smith). The two models are commonly referred to together as “Spridget.”

In spring 1961, the car was modified with a completely new front and rear. The front now had a more ordinary appearance than before, and the rear was equipped with a lockable trunk lid and tail lights borrowed from the soon-to-be-launched MGB. The cockpit was extended and gained space behind the seats. The engine remained at 948cc but was updated with, among other things, larger twin SU carburetors and a few more horsepower. From October 1962, a minor number of updates were introduced: a larger engine at 1098cc, strengthened gearbox, front disc brakes, updated rear brakes, and slightly renewed interior. This updated model also featured sheet metal wheels without the drilled classic ventilation holes from earlier models. With the update, the Midget changed its model code from GAN1 to GAN2, and the Sprite changed from HAN6 to HAN7.
