"A somewhat unusual Lotus representative in a typical seventies outfit and in the form of a rolling restoration project."

Beschreibung

Registered in Sweden in October 1990 and presumably imported from England. A plaque on the tailgate proclaims Lotus Team's seven victories in the Formula 1 Constructors' World Championship. It also commemorates the year 1978 when Ronnie Peterson tragically lost his life following a starting crash at the Monza circuit in Italy. Ronnie Peterson also drove a Lotus Elite as a kind of company car for some years in the seventies. The term "World Champion Car Constructors" may be somewhat misleading as Lotus was the world champion constructor of F1 cars, not road cars. However, this particular example may indeed be a kind of tribute model to the victories in the highest division of racing. 1980 was also the final model year of the Lotus Elite Type 75.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine turns over, but the rest of the condition is unknown. Visually, the engine compartment gives the impression that everything needs renovation, or at least an inspection. A significant number of new spare parts are included, along with a detailed workshop manual.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is very worn, but it could serve as a good template for a new interior. The steering wheel can be cleaned and conditioned with leather treatment. The ignition lock has been removed, and the whereabouts of the ignition keys are not entirely clear.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The advantage of a plastic body and some scratches in the paint is that no major work is needed to make the car's exterior more representative. The Elite Type 75 was cast in two fiberglass halves that were joined along the car's centerline. Older tires with good tread on original wheels in a polishable condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A restoration project focusing on the mechanical aspects and the interior. The fiberglass body and a paint that can be brought to a presentable condition, along with a galvanized frame, have both weathered storage and idle time better.

Fakten zum Modell

Marking a new direction for Lotus, the reborn Elite was designed by Oliver Winterbottom. From the drawing board it was proposed as more upmarket, sophisticated, stylish and refined than any previous road car from the company. It was also more expensive, priced from £5,445 when it first went on sale in January 1975. The design was a mix of fashionable wedge shapes, curves and straight lines, giving it a contemporary look and excellent aerodynamics. It was the first Lotus road car to feature steel beams in the doors, so complied with US safety regulations from the off. This in part helped the car earn Lotus its very first safety award, the International Don Safety Trophy. The interior was designed with help from Giugiaro’s Italdesign studio in Italy, resulting in a spacious and comfortable cabin for four adults plus luggage. Autocar magazine reviewed the Elite and noted it had "typical Lotus excellence of handling combined with a good ride". It was also the first Lotus to benefit from a new glass fibre moulding process. Called Vacuum-Assisted Resin Injection (VARI), it meant the Elite was built in two halves – the upper and the lower. The join was cleverly hidden by the chromed rubbing strip which ran the length of the car’s profile. Chapman was using the same technique in his boat-building business that existed at this time, and it was seen again later on the Lotus Eclat and Esprit.
