Land Rover 88 — 1960

Swedish-sold in a nice condition with a charming initial utilitarian royalist history from one of the royal castles, but also with a completely different amusing history for those who learned about sex education in school from the Danish characters "Inge och Sten".

"Early Land Rovers have a distinct appeal in all circles, and this short model, the 88" Series 2 variant with headlights in the grille, adds a little extra charm for many."

Description

It was delivered new to Ulriksdals Castle Management in June 1960 by the former general agent and retailer for Land Rover in Sweden, AB Gjestvang Co. The car served at Ulriksdals Castle until 1970 when it was purchased by the then well-known Danish psychologist and sex education expert Sten Hegeler, who together with his wife Inge educated schoolchildren and others curious about the subject through films and question columns in newspapers under the pseudonym "Inge & Sten". Hegeler's other contribution to the documentation of this Land Rover 88 mainly consists of a letter to the Land Rover factory where the couple inquires about how and if the roof can be removed. It could, of course, be done, and apparently it had never been done during its service at Ulriksdals Castle. One might also wonder why the general agent couldn't provide such knowledge. Hegeler operated from Småland, and through a few other owners in the province, the car found its current owner in Gothenburg. He was previously a dedicated classic Land Rover enthusiast through his grandfather's car, which they worked on together, and it was the pristine condition and especially the excellent condition of the frame that he fell for. A minor renovation followed with a focus on the technical aspects; chassis parts, steering, and engine/gearbox. The latest and thus the last mandatory inspection was conducted on June 9, 2020.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine underwent a thorough mechanical inspection, including measurements all the way down to the crankshaft. While it hasn't been overhauled, it's deemed to be in a healthy and well-inspected condition. Some typical rattling and clunking can be expected in the transmission, common to this car model, but overall, the engine and gearbox are user-friendly for an interested driver. The original dynamo has been replaced by an alternator, resulting in the car being negative-grounded instead of the original positive-grounded setup. Visually, the engine compartment retains a serviceable appearance, with the engine itself painted by hand in broad strokes using the original Duckegg Engine Blue color.

  • Interior condition:

Spartan as it should be, no carpets, no heating system, and manual windshield wipers. They used to be connected before but are now operated manually. The seats are intact and in good condition; the front ones have been reupholstered while the rear benches appear to be original. The turn signal lever is temporarily and provisionally mounted until the correct part is found. A previous owner or workshop has pragmatically cut a small hole in the floor panel to access the clutch slave cylinder.

  • Exterior condition:

The current owner renovated the car with the ambition for it to be presentable on the exterior, but at the same time rugged. However, the frame was thoroughly treated with blasting and coated with an extra durable epoxy primer followed by polyurethane chassis paint. Despite this, the car's exterior still shines and looks classically handsome in its airplane grey shade, called Mid Grey. It's particularly neat with the untouched seventies-era license plates, especially the dual-row rear plate, which nicely blends into its place.

  • General condition:

Attractive as an uncomplicated and simple ride in all situations, while also ready for the woods and other challenging terrain missions. The odometer reading of just over 24 000 km is likely 124 000 km in total, although a previous owner believed it could even be what the odometer actually indicates today.

Facts about the model

And considering how few resources the production of the same model has consumed over the years, a classic Land Rover is actually the best environmentally friendly car.
