"The revelation, open-top driving in January, the wonderful color, and, not least, the excellent condition, stood out. Stockholm inhabitants were legitimately interested and impressed."

Description

The Type 181 is purely a utility vehicle. The design is a relic of World War II's Kübelvagen. This wagon was made in Mexico in 1974 and arrived in Sweden as transporting goods in 1984. So it has happily enjoyed six owners and numerous spectators in our country for about 40 years. Despite its simplicity, this is a well-built and functional recreational vehicle.

The car is outfitted with a towbar and a more recent radio. It includes an instruction book (German), other paperwork, and a protective cover.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

It starts readily, rides smoothly, and has a pleasant engine hum. It has been thoroughly taken care of by its devoted owners. Both function and operational reliability are rated highly. When moving from third to second, there is a slight "scratch" sound.
It was not possible to completely investigate the car underneath during the examination, but from what could be seen, it appeared to be in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

Spartan but functional interior in fine condition. Possibly a piece of carpet/insulation is missing at the front.

  • Exterior condition:

The bodywork, paintwork, chrome, glass, tires, bumpers, and so on are all in good condition. There was some minor paint run on one wing. Roof and door sides are in good shape. The car is complete and functional in every way.

  • General condition:

This avocado green 181 is in great condition and will thrill and fascinate both the new owner and others around him. It may appear flimsy, yet it is a strong and sturdy vehicle with surprisingly high comfort. Volkswagen's technology and quality are world-class. Simply put, it's a lot of fun.

Facts about the model

There are countless articles written about the history of the Bubblan (also known as the Volkswagen Type 181 or the VW Thing), from its beginnings in the 1930s, to Ferdinand Porsche's involvement, and how English soldiers restarted production after World War II. However, we'll focus on the war for a moment. In Germany, the concept was reused for a military purpose and was called the Type 82 Kübelwagen. It began rolling out from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart in February 1940, and later that year production was moved to Volkswagen. Until 1945, 50,000 vehicles were produced for military use, which, for obvious reasons, came to an abrupt end. By the end of the 1960s, both the West German government and a growing number of civilians wanted a utility vehicle and a fun recreational vehicle. Volkswagen dusted off the old Kübelwagen and offered various markets a "new Kübelwagen," the model 181. It was not a success; the West German army did buy a few thousand, but it was not well received. However, there was some interest among recreational enthusiasts for Jeeps and buggies of all kinds. So Volkswagen developed its vehicle further. In the USA it was called The Thing. From 1973, production moved to Mexico and that same year it received a 1600 cc engine and a more modern rear suspension. Although it did not achieve the same level of success as the original, it was able to capitalize on the success of the Bubblan. The Thing was produced until 1980. Like many beloved things it had many names, in Europe it was known as Trekker and in Mexico it was called Safari.
