Mercedes-Benz 180 D W120 — 1959

Faithful servant in the family and car collection that many years ago underwent a minor renovation. The diesel version was not the most common version of the model in Sweden.

"Fine, dignified, and representative specimen for the model, with an equally dignified and fine history."

Description

The car was sold new in Sweden in September 1959, and reportedly, it was another haulier in Småland who used the car before Sandahls took over it in the seventies. It's not a sprinter, but such a Mercedes has generated many memories for many as the model was a sturdy and popular car during the sixties and early seventies.
The car comes from Sandahls' collections, which Bilweb Auctions AB will sell in early spring under four different themes; first out are some of the family's popular faithful servants, mainly Mercedes, Volkswagen, and some jokers, then half a dozen exclusive Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, followed by a selection of early Ford cars and a Chevrolet from the childhood and adolescence of motoring. The last will be nine different prize-winning and representative full-size American cars from 1959, the year when the fins were the largest.
Sandahls is today one of Sweden's largest family-owned transport conglomerates. The company was founded in Värnamo in 1949. Older generations have in their private museum collected about 40 cars under various themes for many years. Bilweb Auctions AB has now been given the task and the honor to sell these in four rounds in February and March this year.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

After a recent start up service, the engine and gearbox run well, but the brakes need a full renovation due to extended museum storage. The car includes nice steel wheels, hub caps, and older winter tires with some cracks. It has a towbar, a new battery, and a tidy engine bay. The last inspection was in 1984, and one final inspection is needed then its exempt for ever.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is complete and, given its age, in good condition with no significant damages or issues. It would benefit from a thorough cleaning to make it shine. All the original gauges and dashboard are present, featuring attractive old bakelite details. The car includes good rubber floor mats.

  • Exterior condition:

The car underwent a repaint to a good standard, likely over 20 years ago, and it has maintained a bright appearance with only a few minor paint flaws. The body is straight with no rust problems, and the underbody is clean and well-maintained. The chrome work is intact and shiny, with no damage. There is only a small stone chip on the windscreen.

  • General condition:

This is an attractive car that primarily requires brake repairs. Once fixed, it will become a great classic "Bullmerca" to enjoy this summer, and it's also suitable for towing a trailer or an old caravan.
