Volvo Amazon 121 B20 — 1967

A classic interpretation of the owner's youth, a similar Amazon was his first car, and in such a form, he experienced the first years of driving. Few owners, a consciously fine condition, and detailed good documentation.

"Dignified and sensitively updated Amazon, enjoyable to drive and practical. And furthermore, affordable."

Description

It was delivered to its first owner, a metalworker named Karl Nilsson, by Bil & Truck in Gothenburg in December 1966. Karl Nilsson traded in a Ford Anglia Estate, which had a trade-in value of 4,650 SEK, almost a third of the price of the Amazon, which was 16,650 SEK. Karl Nilsson was a meticulous and proud owner, and it's not often that complete service documentation from a sixties car is preserved, along with all other fine documentation. He drove it all the way until the spring of 2003 when it was sold and passed through a couple of regional owners north of Kungälv before the current owner purchased the car in 2014. The reason it was serviced on Öland almost every year from 1966 to 1977 must mean that Karl might have had a summer residence on Öland and a personal contact at the workshops there. After 1977, there is no service documentation, and the last service entry in the book was made at 93 380 kilometers. With today's odometer reading and the help of inspection records from the eighties and nineties, we can ascertain that Karl still used his Amazon relatively regularly during those decades, and that the total mileage today is likely 194 160 kilometers. The latest and thus the last mandatory inspection was carried out on 2017-07-03.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The current owner has installed a refurbished B20 engine with an overdrive gearbox, and the old engine comes with the car if desired. Furthermore, it features dual SU carburetors, a K-camshaft in a planed and ported cylinder head, and a two-inch exhaust system, all in line with the tuning and young owner ideals of the time. These modifications are also visible externally in the form of two 122S emblems, even though the car is not originally an S model. The engine runs smoothly, hums characteristically, and the overdrive gear provides a brisk calmness during highway driving.

  • Interior condition:

Well-preserved interior with comfortably worn front seats that provide a sporty low driving position, the additional headrests and the attached wide-angle rearview mirror are all nicely typical and classic time markers for the model. Also, note that the instrument cluster's crinkle paint is intact without any brass showing through. Nice headliner and new carpets.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice and presentable, partially repainted and partially in original paint with a shiny cherry red finish. The current owner has replaced the floor on the driver's side and nicely repainted it under the new mats. Exterior additions include the small extra lights, the real mud flaps, the preserved early license plates, 5.5-inch wheels from a 1800S, and a useful tow hitch, all contributing to a very pleasant Amazon appearance. The loose white tire sidewalls are indeed removable, thankfully. Beneath them hides the brand of the new tires, Milestone Green Sport.

  • General condition:

Nicely performance and appearance-enhanced according to the sporting ideals of the time, in well-preserved condition with an exceptionally pleasant history and documentation.

Facts about the model

The Amazon, as the first car of youth in the seventies and eighties, is what the 740 and 940 are today, and also the 850. And the PV in the sixties. Many in Sweden drove Volvos in their first years of having a driver's license. Subjectively, the Amazon is the most attractive in the group, but objectively, it's a design that has aged exceptionally well. With sporty accessories that originally belonged to the now highly valued Sport, GT, and S versions, the auction car is an affordable representative of the youth Amazon.
