"A fine and sturdy driving experience in vintage style, everything works flawlessly. The body, interior, and chassis look like those of a new car."

Description

The car was manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück in October 1964 with USA specifications and was sold new in New York in early 1965. The owner eventually brought the car to their winter residence in New Mexico, where it remained until the mid-2010s. The car was exported to Germany around 2015 and underwent a complete renovation between 2017 and 2020. Since it had spent most of its active time in a dry climate, there were no severe rust issues, but the car was still sun-faded, despite reportedly being parked indoors. When it returned to Europe after 52 years, the car was disassembled, and the body was lifted. The floor panel and chassis were renovated by a Porsche mechanic, as well as the engine and gearbox. The floor panel and suspension were sandblasted and painted in the original color. All bushings and the entire brake system were replaced, as well as shock absorbers and the fuel tank. Furthermore, the body was sanded clean, epoxy primed, and fully repainted in the original Java Green color (L518). The convertible top and frame were renovated by an upholsterer. The entire wood frame was replaced, along with all layers of fabric and insulation, from the headliner to the exterior roof. For the exterior, a canvas fabric was chosen, an upgrade from the original. All rubber seals were replaced, and new interior was installed, including new seat upholstery, carpets, and door panels. The interior is in light beige artificial leather, which was also the color of the interior when the car was new. The car arrived in Sweden from Germany in 2020 and was registered in 2022 after service and inspection at the Volkswagen and Porsche specialist, Fahlke Classic Cars in Åmål. All body surfaces are in excellent condition with a rare and beautiful paint and color combination. The engine starts easily, and the gears engage smoothly. The engine runs well with no rattles or vibrations. The most recent and therefore the last inspection was conducted on October 3, 2022.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Technically and mechanically fully restored with nearly everything being replaced with new components, including heat exchangers, exhaust system, and wheels. Everything that could be replaced was swapped out with new parts, and the remaining components were refurbished. The chassis work took a year at Fahlke.

  • Interior condition:

Stylish interior in light beige artificial leather with refurbished seats, new carpets, and door panels. All details have been renovated or replaced with high-quality, newly manufactured components. (Originally, the car had two-tone door panels and rubber mats.) All interior features work perfectly.

  • Exterior condition:

Exquisite paintwork, externally beautiful in every detail. A more exclusive type of canvas used for the convertible top instead of the original black vinyl. Chrome and glass are in pristine condition. All rubber and chrome trim, both around the windows and doors, are also new. Lastly, the car has been rust-proofed in all cavities with penetrating wax.

  • General condition:

High attention to detail; the car feels and looks like new, even under the carpets, spare tire, and beneath all fenders and footrests. A meticulously executed renovation with an investment of over 500,000 SEK in labor and materials.

Facts about the model

Volkswagen convertibles from the sixties are regarded by many enthusiasts as the most beautiful. Many sleek exterior details from the fifties' models were still retained, and on the inside, there was still a white steering wheel and white buttons; the last year for them was 1965. In the same year, the new improved front suspension with ball joints, better brakes, and larger windows was introduced.
