"In excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically."

Description

This is an authentic Avanti R2 model, with chassis number 5072 and engine number RS1107. However, the supercharger is missing. All other R2 details, such as valve covers, pulleys, brackets, and the speedometer calibrated to 160 mph, are present. When and why this modification was made is unknown. The car was imported from the USA in the spring of 2021 by a Studebaker enthusiast who is now thinning out his collection.

The Studebaker Avanti was produced in 4,647 units between June 1962 and December 1963. Of those, 1,833 were delivered with a supercharger.

All equipment and lights are in working order. Facts about the model

Avanti was intended to be a image booster for Studebaker, which was facing a steep decline during the 1960s. It was launched in April 1962 as "America's only four-passenger high-performance personal car." While it may appear modest on the surface, underneath it was a small monster. It featured a modified Hawk 289" engine that produced 240 horsepower. It was also the first car in the United States to have Bendix front disc brakes. The fiberglass body with integrated roll bar helped keep the weight down. All of this contributed to the Avanti's top speed of 215 km/h.

For those who felt that was not enough, there was the option of the R2 model. Studebaker added a powerful supercharger to the engine, as the company was associated with Paxton at the time. With the supercharger, the output increased to over 290 horsepower, and a new speedometer had to be installed, graded to 160 mph (255 km/h). Achieving a top speed of 245-250 km/h was entirely possible with the R2. This was during a time before Lamborghini even existed.

The R3 model raised the bar even further. The engine was bored out to 304 cubic inches, and the four-barrel carburetor was reconfigured. A bit more boost from the supercharger pushed the power towards the 400 mark. It could go from 0 to 100 km/h in a mind-boggling 5.5 seconds, and it had a top speed of 270 km/h, making it the world's fastest production car for several years. However, only nine cars were produced with the R3 specification.

The R4 engine, on the other hand, was never installed in any Avanti. It was a 304" engine without a supercharger but with dual four-barrel carburetors and a compression ratio of 12:1. Some Hawk and Lark models received this engine instead.

The R5 was the ultimate development of the Avanti. However, it was not intended for the general public but served as an experimental car to determine how fast an Avanti could go. To find out, they added DUAL superchargers to the engine! The power output was measured at 575 horsepower, and the R5, or Due Cento as it was also called, reached a staggering 315 km/h.

Studebaker Avanti was, however, a very short-lived model. Production began in June 1962 and ended in December 1963 when the entire Studebaker factory relocated to Canada. The Avanti did not make the move. In total, only 4,647 were produced, with 1,833 of them being R2 models and only nine R3 models.
