MG MGB GT 1800 RHD — 1970

A classic sports coupe, in an equally classic color combination from the time when pop music, Carnaby Street, and sprightly small sports cars from England were in vogue.

"A practical and beautiful sports car that now needs some care and love, in order to once again experience its heyday from the 60s and 70s."

Description

The current owner, an Englishman living in Sweden, purchased the car in England in 2008. A thorough inspection and repairs were carried out by a sports car specialist for £3,400. After that, the car was in good working order and in excellent condition. In 2009, it was imported to Sweden and used as a hobby car during the brighter months but became increasingly idle over the years. In 2021, it received new tires, an engine overhaul, clutch and brake work. However, it is currently out of use due to a malfunctioning fuel pump, and unfortunately, it has been kept outside for a couple of years after having to leave its garage. It is now being sold as a project.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car was not possible to test drive and has been standing still for a few years. The fuel pump is not functioning and needs to be serviced. The car is complete but requires a thorough check-up.

  • Interior condition:

The interior, including seats, door panels, carpets, instrumentation, and headliner, is in good usable condition but shows some signs of wear and feels a bit damp. Equipped with four-point seat belts. Right-hand drive.

  • Exterior condition:

The body has both sheet metal and paint damage with signs of rust. The extent of the damage beyond what can be seen is uncertain. However, the glass and chrome are in good condition. It has good original Rostyle wheels with some wear and newer Good Year tires.

  • General condition:

This is a project car that requires some work, and the level of restoration is up to the new owner. However, with that said, you get one of the most classic sports cars of all time. In the coupe version, you also get one of the most practical sports cars. Virtually all parts are available and the model is relatively easy to work on.

Facts about the model

In the late 1950s, the MGB project was started as a successor to the MGA. In September 1962, the new roadster was unveiled and received positive feedback from both the automotive press and buyers. The 1798cc engine with twin SU carburetors provided excellent performance. The gearbox was four-speed, but for a modest extra cost, buyers could have an electric overdrive.

From 1965, the technology was improved with a five-bearing crankshaft, an oil cooler as standard, and an electric tachometer. That year also saw the introduction of a stylish and practical three-door 2+2 coupe version, called the GT, in a fashionable hatchback design by Pininfarina. This was done so that hunting, golfing, and other sports and leisure equipment could fit in the sports car. Even though there is another British classic car that bears the nickname "doghouse", this car is even more of a car for a pair of Westies in the back. The small rear seat had a folding backrest. Two years later, a six-cylinder engine was also made available for the small car, with or without a roof.

For the 1970 model year, the radiator got a new look and Rostyle aluminum wheels replaced steel wheels. Wire wheels could, as always, be ordered through the years. The model also experienced being equipped with a V8 engine from Rover. Production continued until 1981. Later versions were made, and one can essentially build a new car even today. Everything from newly manufactured bodies to parts big and small is available. This is a beloved and cherished model that never goes out of style. According to information, 21,835 GT versions were produced.
