"Well-functioning car in good used condition."

Description

"The current owner purchased the car from an estate in 2003. For the first ten years, the car was driven quite a lot, mainly to meets and vintage car rallies, which resulted in some long trips associated with these events. The odometer reads just over 70,000 kilometers but has likely rolled over once. Over the past ten years, the car has been used more sporadically and has been kept in a garage. It was inspected in the summer of 2023 and received two remarks on the wheel bearings, which were fixed. It was re-inspected without any remarks in September and is now both tax-exempt and exempt from inspection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Two-stroke engine and four-speed gearbox. Runs very smoothly and the gearbox shifts gently and nicely, however, there's some transmission noise. The freewheel function is a bit uncertain. Mechanically very reliable and has been largely trouble-free over the years. For a well-functioning freewheel and a completely silent gearbox, a review of those points is recommended.

  • Interior condition:

Nice interior with some signs of wear. The headliner is intact and in good condition. The upholstery is very nice with slight wear, and a small damage can be seen on the backrest of the driver's seat, as well as on the left door side near the handle. The springs on the door pockets are worn. Original full-coverage rubber mats on the floors. Saab original rubber insert mats in the front and back.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted sometime in the early eighties. The paint has held up relatively well, but some spray filler bubbles have appeared, and some rust bubbles can be seen on the doors. In connection with this, it seems an overview was done, rust was repaired, and fiberglass fenders were installed in the front – these have a very good fit. The hood has later received some touch-ups. Some cracks can be seen in the rear lights. The rear bumper is slightly dented on the right rear side.

  • General condition:

In good used condition and generally a reliable car.

Owner's comment

When I purchased the car in 2003, I tried the freewheel, but it was very jerky, so I deactivated it using the lever and have driven without the activated freewheel for all these years. The secret is to disengage the gear when going downhill and coast. In other words, the same thing that the freewheel would otherwise do automatically. If you neglect to do this, a two-stroke engine will seize up pretty quickly.

Facts about the model

The Saab 96 was produced from 1960 to 1980. Up until 1967, the power source was a two-stroke engine. Due to its distinctive exhaust sound, the car earned the nickname "jungle drum". Because of the two-stroke engine, the Saab 96 had a freewheel function. This feature was introduced to protect two-stroke engines from damage due to engine braking. If the engine continues to rotate without fuel supply, it does not receive sufficient lubrication, as the oil is mixed in with the gasoline.
Saab 96 underwent a facelift in 1965. The front was redesigned to be longer in preparation for a more modern engine. Contemporary Saab enthusiasts refer to this model as the "long nose
