Volkswagen Phaeton W12 — 2003

A well-priced flagship from a brand with, in this case, a somewhat contradictory name. The model name, however, has a pleasing ring to it. In nicely used condition, offering interesting technology and electronics to learn about and maintain.

"The driving experience and comfort are nothing to joke about, and it’s a type of car that will likely never return. From that perspective, an enthusiast-minded new owner has an interesting and historically significant preservation task ahead."

Description

It was delivered new in Denmark in May 2003, and the owner soon took the car to Italy where he had a country house. It was used and serviced there for a number of years, and likely acquired Italian manuals during that time, although the reason for this is unclear. The car remained in use abroad until 2008, when the owner moved to or worked in Sweden, and the car was imported and registered there for road use in December 2008.

The Danish owner traded it in at Autoropa in 2016, who in turn sent the car to UCARS. It was then purchased by Flyinge Stuteri, who incurred high running costs during their ownership. In 2023, they decided they were done with the Phaeton and traded it in to a dealer, where the current owner found exactly the model he had long intended to own and use.

A substantial amount of documentation is included in a thick binder, and the current owner has taken the time to add up all service, repair, and maintenance receipts over the years—at least since the car was imported to Sweden. The total comes to just over SEK 900,000, not far from the car’s original purchase price. It has recently been serviced with all oils and fluids changed, inspected, and will be delivered with a new roadworthiness inspection.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine sounds exactly as a W12 should, responds well, and the gearbox shifts smoothly and correctly. This type of car requires a certain level of ongoing maintenance, and at the same time benefits from being regularly driven—it’s the best way to keep it in good condition. It’s also important to always ensure that the batteries are charged and/or kept on a maintenance charger.

  • Interior condition

Fresh and well-kept interior in a light and welcoming shade. The leather feels in good condition, along with the seats, headliner, and door panels. The infotainment system and climate control work well, and the electric seat adjustments are fully functional. Some electronics are not working, such as the TV function and the massage feature in one of the seats.

  • Exterior condition

Presents well from a distance, although the paint shows wear consistent with the mileage. Some worn plastic details at the front, on the grille, and paint peeling on the side mirrors. The trunk must be opened manually, as the automatic function needs to be reprogrammed. Newer Yokohama tires on original wheels with some minor blemishes.

  • General condition

Rare, elusive (with few sold in Sweden), and also challenging to preserve in the sense that a Phaeton has electrical demands that must be properly maintained and not neglected. At the same time, it offers an incredible amount of car and exclusivity for the money, as well as a fun and unexpected automotive statement from a brand that built its reputation on quite the opposite.

Facts about the model

The Volkswagen Phaeton, Type D1, was first presented as a design study at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999, then under the name “Volkswagen D Concept.” It was Volkswagen’s chief Ferdinand Piëch who wanted to create a luxury car to compete with Mercedes-Benz and BMW. However, sales did not meet expectations. The price was on par with its competitors, but Volkswagen’s brand did not carry the same level of prestige.

The car was built at Volkswagen’s glass-fronted factory in Dresden, the Gläserne Manufaktur. The Phaeton shared its platform with the Bentley Continental GT, Bentley Continental GTC, and Bentley Flying Spur, and its W12 engine with the Audi A8.

The name “Phaeton” is derived from Greek mythology. Phaethon was the son of the sun god Helios, who one day had his wish granted—to drive the sun chariot across the sky. The name later came to be used for body styles on both horse-drawn carriages and automobiles, including models from Horch, Packard, and Škoda.

The VW Phaeton was introduced in Sweden in November 2002. At launch, two engines were available: a 3.2-liter V6 producing 241 hp, and a 6.0-liter W12 with 420 hp. In 2003, another impressive option was added—a diesel V10 TDI producing 313 hp and, above all, 750 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. Top speed was, as customary, electronically limited to 250 km/h.
