"Delightful to see and experience a preserved original car from the marque with few owners in unusually fine and charming condition."

Description

According to the documentation, it was delivered to its first owner in Rome in February 1979. The car was manufactured in June 1978 accordingly as MY78, but was not sold until the following year. The first owner always kept it garaged and apparently drove it sparingly, with just 7,500 km on the odometer the car's untouched condition and history definitely suggests this is the genuine mileage and not an odometer that has rolled over. The current owner drove the car home as a little adventure in September 2021 and it was registered in traffic in Sweden in the spring of the following year. The latest approved inspection was carried out on 29 April 2026 and the next one will be the last according to current regulations. The owner published a report about the journey from Italy to Sweden in Alfa Romeo Club Sverige's magazine Klöverbladet, (Click here to read it as a PDF - Swedish only), in April 2024. Below is also a video where the seller in Italy tells how he virtually rescued the untouched car when the first owner had passed away.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

During and after the registration process, the owner received assistance from the well-known figure Kåre Lindén, who was based at Auto Alfa Väst AB in Gothenburg. He checked the carburetor, ignition and carried out a general inspection prior to the registration inspection. Today it is a familiar character and the lively sound is recognizable from the classic twincam engine. The linkage to the well-known de Dion rear axle and gearbox-mounted differential construction was a source of unwanted harshness, but everything feels good on this example.

  • Interior condition

Fine interior trim, door panels and headliner together with equally fine controls, handles and steering wheel. A couple of small cigarette(?) burn marks on the left rear. The speedometer can be hesitant to start up sometimes. Clever height adjustment of the headrests and worn gear shift knob in wood imitation. A proper wood knob from the brand should be easy to find.

  • Exterior condition

Based on our assessment and information from the owner's contacts with the original seller in Italy, it is still original paint. There are minor touch-ups and signs of use that also suggest this. Original fine and undamaged Campanatura spare wheels, interestingly shod with newer, robust M+S tyres from a lesser-known manufacturer.

  • General condition

This model is not common in Sweden and especially not in an unrestored fine original condition. A set of genuine and good summer tyres from a well-known brand enhances the road feel. A genuine and pleasant overall impression.

Facts about the model

The Alfetta GT 1.6 combines timeless design, a classic smaller-displacement engine with fine driving characteristics thanks to the gearbox placement at the rear by the differential (de Dion axle), which provides a 50/50 weight distribution and thus excellent balance. The model, which was designed by Italdesign under the direction of Giorgetto Giugiaro, was introduced as a more economical complement to the larger engine options. The 1978 model belongs to the sought-after first series, characterized by its chrome details and classic lines. The following year, 1979, Alfa Romeo began phasing out the 1.6-liter engine in most markets in favor of updated 2.0 versions. Around 1980–1981, the entire series was redesigned. The classic chrome details and the split stainless steel bumpers found on the 1978 model were then replaced by period-correct, gray-black plastic. 1978 thus represents the end of the original, mechanically raw and visually pure era for the model, before the plastic age took over completely.
