"A taut and straightforward British motor car from the 1950s with fine charm throughout and in its details. The various Austin models sold well in Sweden during this period. They were capable cars with good quality. This one has come through the years well and is in fine condition with much original character retained despite its over 70 years."

Description

According to information, this car was sold in Sweden when new but was registered for traffic again on 20 May 1999. According to information, essentially unrestored and the odometer reading of 70,800 km may be correct. The current owner, a well-known figure in the automotive history hobby for many years, acquired the car in August 2023 and it has been part of his extensive private collection. Seller and Bilwebauctions chose for logistical reasons to leave the vehicle in the collection during inspection and photography.

The car comes with period-correct attributes and documentation.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Started for sale but not driven for some years. When last driven it ran well. Now requires a service but as it is a relatively basic car it should be a straightforward process to get it back on the road again.

Not inspected on a lift but what could be seen looked good.

  • Interior condition

Lovely patinated original upholstery in leather and braid with good seat comfort. Door panels and interior panels likewise in good condition. Newer matching textile carpet. Fine headliner. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard and gauges in fine condition and reportedly everything functions as intended.

  • Exterior condition

Fine original paintwork as far as can be ascertained. According to information provided, the left rear door has been repaired and repainted following a minor incident. Glass, chrome, trim, emblems and lighting details in fine condition. Good steel wheels, hub caps and trim rings. Well-maintained, fine and clean engine compartment. Period-correct auxiliary lights.

  • General condition

Charming utility vehicle for hobby driving and it fits in nicely at meets and events with its British style and air. History and fine charming condition, along with an attractive price level, make it an excellent entry ticket to classic and enthusiast motoring.

Owner's comment

Our father has always been an enthusiastic motor historian and over the years many fine and well-maintained vehicles have passed through his collection. He has always looked after, serviced and kept them in excellent and drivable condition. It has been a lifestyle and a wealth of friends, vehicles and memories that he and we as a family carry with us. Now it is time for the next chapter for us and the vehicles in the collection.

Facts about the model

The Austin Motor Company manufactured cars from 1905 to 1989. The company was founded by Herbert Austin, who had a background with Wolseley. Initially based at Longbridge near Birmingham, the company faced economic difficulties after the First World War, but recovered with the introduction of the small car Austin Seven. During the 1930s business slowed, and Herbert Austin himself stepped down with age. He passed away in 1941. During the Second World War, production was converted to aircraft engines and aeroplanes. After the war, Austin relatively quickly resumed car manufacturing and acquired, among others, Vanden Plas. They began the successful collaboration with Donald Healy and launched the sports car Austin-Healy, an icon today. They also merged with Morris in 1952 to become BMC. In an increasingly turbulent period for British car manufacturing, BMC became part of British Leyland in 1968.

After the Second World War, when Austin converted from wartime production back to private cars, it was time for new models in the family car segments. The A30 came in the small segment, the A40 somewhat larger, and the A50 in the mid-range segment. Although the A40 arrived already in the late 1940s and was rather bulky, these were bodies with the newer "shoe box" design. All the models were developed from 1957 with upgrades to the A35, A45 and A55. The A55 in particular was a comfortable and practical car and common on our roads from the late 1950s into the 1960s. With the additional name Cambridge, it offered a reliable car in British style with BMC's classic 1.5 litre engine. When the A55 arrived, there was an updated rear section with more spacious boot capacity and larger rear window. Not infrequently, the cars featured two-tone paintwork. In total, approximately 154,000 examples were built. From 1959 it became something quite different when the Pinin Farina-designed bodywork arrived, but that is another story.
