Description

This well-preserved Saab has had only two owners since new. The first owner, a woman from Bälinge, used the car primarily for commuting to and from work in the neighbouring village of Björklinge – but only when the weather was fine. If the weather forecast predicted rain, the car remained in the garage while she cycled or walked instead. Such unusually careful use has contributed significantly to the car's excellent condition.

The current owner took over the car in September 1991 and has since driven only around 1,000 km. The car has thus been used very sparingly over a long period and is essentially unmodified. It has never suffered from rust issues and has weathered rust very well, although there are a few minor rust spots visible in the photographs. The bodywork also has some minor dents, but the paint is generally in good condition.

The interior is very well preserved. The first owner even retained the protective plastic on the front seats, over the original upholstery, until the current owner took over the car. The original upholstery remains in good condition and the fine original rubber mats are still present, see photographs. The rest of the interior is in very fine condition, although the upper part of the rear seat backrest is somewhat sun-faded. The car's seals and rubber trim are in good condition and not cracked from age.

The exhaust system appears to have been replaced. Technically, there are a few matters to address. The battery tray is somewhat rusty and has come loose from its front mounting. The hoses and water pump pipes in front of the battery tray may also require attention. Underneath the rear hatch on the right side, a screw is missing – it can be found loose in the boot, see photograph.

The car is registered but has not been inspected since 2017. Before inspection, it should therefore undergo a thorough overhaul and service, with particular attention to the area around the battery tray and the water pump pipes.

Overall, this is a very well-maintained and carefully used Saab with an unusually fine ownership history, very low mileage and an essentially unmodified bodywork and interior. A fine period piece for those who appreciate well-preserved cars with history.

Facts about the model

Model year 1979 was built by Valmet in Nystad, Finland, when Trollhättan needed additional capacity for the 900 model. The cars manufactured in Finland were assembled more craftsman-like and are regarded today as better built than the earlier ones. In March 1979, the chrome hub caps were replaced by black plastic ones. This car was built in February, but first registered/sold in September 1979. Production ceased in January 1980. Those built in autumn 1979 received the model year designation 1980. No changes on these compared to the 1979 ones.
