Velocette LE Mk3 200cc — 1959

Unique and fun design, easy to maneuver and low. A city-friendly motorcycle where raw performance has not been prioritized. With 8 horsepower and 130 kg in service weight it still works surprisingly well in the city and on small country roads.

"Fun motorcycle with a reliable and safe presence as its main attribute."

Description

The current owner of the motorcycle imported it from England in 2000 and registered it in Sweden in 2001. He also became involved with the English club for the motorcycle, The LE Velo Club Ltd, where there is a lot of documentation of correspondence with club members for purchasing parts and seeking advice. The last inspection was done on September 9th, 2016, and it is therefore exempt from inspection as it was approved when the new regulations took effect on April 20th, 2018. The English police were particularly fond of this motorcycle and when the model was discontinued, they purchased all the spare parts from the factory. More information can be found under "History."

The motorcycle was driven a few years ago. The engine now runs fine after a start up service with new spark plugs, but the carburetor will need to be serviced and checked.

  • Interior condition:

Low seat height and comfortable riding position, vinyl seat is clean and in nice condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Nice finish for its age on the paint, details, decals, and controls. Tyres hold air well and the wheels feel fresh and look good.

  • General condition:

Nice and user-friendly condition on an equally practical little motorcycle with a "little engine". LE, in other words.

Facts about the model

The Velocette LE is a motorcycle manufactured by Veloce Ltd from 1948 to 1971. The LE designation simply stood for "little engine." The small 200 cc engine had a modest 8 horsepower, but the motorcycle was known for its reliability, safe handling, and low center of gravity. The model was used by over fifty British police departments, and all riders were known as "Noddies" because police regulations required them to greet each other, but letting go of the handlebars could be dangerous for Velocette riders. Therefore, they were allowed to nod as a greeting, and the LE got the nickname "the Noddy Bike." In 1958, the Velocette Mk III LE was released with a foot-operated gear pedal and a conventional kickstart.

The transmission became four-speed and, together with the easy-rolling 18-inch wheels, the LE Mk3 had an average fuel consumption of around 0.25 liters per mile. After ten years of development, the Velocette LE was both reliable and practical, but on February 3, 1971, the company voluntarily went bankrupt. The very last motorcycles produced in the Veloce factory were LEs. Production of other motorcycles had been delayed or canceled to manufacture LEs in various forms, and the lucrative police deliveries had stopped. The Kent County Constabulary police department bought the remaining spare parts and kept their LE motorcycles running until 1974.
