Facts about the model
The origin of the Vespa lies in Piaggio’s shift away from aircraft manufacturing after World War II. Enrico Piaggio recognized the need for an affordable and simple means of transport in post-war Europe. The name "Vespa" (Italian for wasp) is said to have come from the scooter’s shape—with its wide rear end—when Enrico Piaggio reportedly exclaimed upon seeing the prototype: "Sembra una vespa!" ("It looks like a wasp!").
The engine is mounted directly to the rear wheel, eliminating the need for a chain and providing generous legroom for the rider. The frame is made from pressed steel, and the wheels are small. Over the years, a wide variety of models with different engine sizes and designs have been introduced, many becoming bestsellers—yet the core design remains unchanged.
Vespa arrived early in Sweden and quickly became popular. Vespa Club Stockholm was founded as early as 1951, and Vespa Club Sweden followed in 1955. The luxury model Touring VGL1, painted in metallic blue and equipped with chrome trim, crash bars, a backrest, and 10-inch wheels, was introduced in 1957. It was never sold in Italy but was instead a special model for Sweden and a few other markets.
Initially, Vespa was imported by Como M and T Bjerke AB, and in 1962, Fram-King took over the agency. Since 2012, the scooters have been sold by the Swedish Piaggio Group.
