"The car has been stationary for a long period, and the entire fuel system should be inspected and serviced. During the test drive, it felt solid and well-built, drove normally on the road, and the brakes functioned properly."

Description

The Isabella Coupé is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful models ever produced. This particular car is in very good condition, with quality paintwork and an exceptionally well-preserved interior.

The car was re-registered in 2009 following a comprehensive restoration carried out by the current owner, after having been absent from the vehicle register for many years. Unfortunately, the owner has since passed away, and no substantial documentation of the restoration has been found.

The car has recently been started and driven, but the fuel system requires attention, as the engine runs somewhat unevenly and there are fuel leaks from the tank and fuel lines. The ignition switch and steering column lock are inoperative because the key has broken off and remains stuck in the lock cylinder. However, the car starts without any issues using the push-button starter. Two used ignition switches are included, one of which comes with a key.

The interior is in first-class condition, and the car comes with several period accessories, including a vintage driving helmet, a camping table with chairs, and a picnic basket containing plates, mugs, and cutlery. Also included is a tire pressure gauge in its original case, which appears to have been supplied with the car when new.

The car has been used only sparingly since being re-registered and has attracted considerable admiration at classic car gatherings in the Östersund area. This rust-free example can be returned to full working order with relatively modest effort while preserving its originality and functionality.

Due to the fuel leak, the car should be collected using a vehicle transporter.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine runs smoothly with no unusual noises, but the carburetor requires cleaning. The fuel tank has a leak at one of its seams, and the fuel lines are old and partially deteriorated. The front muffler has a small hole.

The underbody is free from rust damage. There is some oil leakage from the rear axle seals, and the rubber axle boots show signs of age-related cracking.

The right low-beam headlight is not functioning. A new battery has been fitted. The heater and fuel gauge are not working.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in excellent condition and appears to have been retrimmed in more recent years. The headliner and carpets are clean and undamaged. Several layers of sound-deadening material have been fitted beneath the carpeting, and the floor underneath is dry and in very good condition.

The dashboard is in good condition, although the gear lever mounting appears to be worn and has been temporarily repaired with tape.

The trunk is in excellent condition and contains the original spare wheel and jack.

  • Exterior condition

According to the information provided, the car has been repainted in its original factory color, and the finish is of good quality. The panel gaps for the doors, hood, and trunk lid are even and well aligned.

There are a few small paint bubbles on the right-hand sill (see photo), as well as some minor surface rust around the left-hand door.

  • General condition

A very fine and rare Borgward Isabella that can be returned to first-class condition with only a few straightforward improvements.

Facts about the model

The car was sold new in January 1959 by Holmberg and Jonsson in Östersund and is believed to have remained in the Östersund area ever since. At some point it was taken off the road and eventually removed from the vehicle register, where it remained until 2009, when it was purchased by the current owner.

Sadly, the owner passed away earlier this year, and aside from the available registration records, no significant documentation relating to the car's history has been found to date.
