"An unlikely combination: a Jaguar S-Type fitted with a six-cylinder diesel engine of French origin. To our knowledge, this is the only 1965 S-Type equipped with a diesel engine. The model was originally offered exclusively with six-cylinder petrol engines, so purists will no doubt have their opinions about the conversion.

That said, the engine conversion appears to have been carried out successfully and functions well. Before the car can be returned to the road, the fuel tank requires cleaning and the braking system needs refurbishment. The diesel conversion was officially approved when it was carried out in the 1970s. The car was last inspected in 2016 and, under current Swedish regulations, is now exempt from periodic roadworthiness inspections."

Description

This Jaguar S-Type was sold new in Sweden. In the mid-1970s, it was purchased by Mr. Sjöqvist of Nybro. After experiencing technical problems with the original engine, he decided to convert the car to diesel power. The chosen replacement was a new 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder diesel engine producing approximately 90 horsepower.

Mr. Sjöqvist continued to use the car with its diesel engine until the 1990s. In 2000, the Jaguar was acquired by Mr. Bergström of Svedala. The current owner purchased the car at auction in 2025. At that time, it had been off the road for an extended period and would not start. Considerable work was therefore undertaken to dismantle and clean the diesel injection pump. All fuel injectors were also removed and pressure-tested, and the engine received a full service with fresh oil and other maintenance items.

The engine now starts readily and runs very well. The only remaining issue before the car can be driven reliably is to clean the fuel tank more thoroughly, as sediment occasionally blocks the fuel line, causing the engine to stall. During our inspection, when the car was driven out of the garage for photography, the engine restarted immediately after the fuel line was cleared by blowing it through in reverse.

The engine itself was most commonly used in marine applications, yet it looks remarkably well suited to the Jaguar. It fits the engine bay perfectly, and the conversion appears to have been carried out to a good standard.

The brakes are currently binding quite heavily, so the car will need to be collected by trailer following the auction. The odometer reads 7,317 km, although the total mileage from new is unknown.

The sale includes a comprehensive file of documentation, including the instruction manual for the diesel engine. An original wire-wheel spare wheel is also included.

The owner has decided to sell the car as he no longer has sufficient time to devote to it, having several other classic vehicles that also require his attention.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car is powered by an Indenor XDP 6.90 engine—a six-cylinder inline diesel manufactured by the French company Indenor, a subsidiary of Peugeot. According to the accompanying documentation, the conversion was carried out in 1976. It is fitted with a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, and the engine conversion is fully registered and approved.

Following a thorough overhaul and cleaning of the diesel injection pump, the engine now runs very well. Please refer to the main description for details of the remaining work required to the fuel system.

As the car has been off the road for several years, the braking system requires a complete overhaul. The brakes are binding heavily and will need to be dismantled and serviced, with the rear brakes appearing to be the main source of the problem. As a result, we were unable to carry out a proper road test and were limited to moving the car out of the garage for photography.

  • Interior condition

The interior is attractive and well maintained, trimmed in classic English leather. The driver's seat shows some natural wear consistent with age, and conditioning the leather throughout the cabin is recommended. The wood veneer trim is in good condition (see photos). The carpet on the driver's side is missing. The luggage compartment is in good order and has been fitted with an additional removable carpet to provide extra protection.

  • Exterior condition

Repainted in white around the early 2000s, with the original paint still visible on the luggage compartment floor panel. The paintwork has been well preserved, and the body is straight with panel gaps that are typical for the model. There is an older repair at the lower mounting point of the stone guard on the right rear fender. Fitted with genuine wire wheels and period-correct Michelin X tires with good tread depth, although they do show some age-related cracking. Equipped with a tow hitch approved for a towing capacity of 1,260 kg.

  • General condition

An attractive Jaguar featuring a Swedish inspection-approved diesel engine conversion. It requires an overhaul of the braking system and cleaning of the fuel tank, but otherwise has very few issues to address.
