"This car does not pass by unnoticed. It radiates something from a bygone era with nobility and sober luxury, plus a touch of the sporting image that Bentley had and still has, regardless of model year and epoch. Renovated to an exquisite condition with all attributes in place. It functions well, but as always with a car that has stood for longer periods in the garage, an inspection is recommended."

Description

Imported from England and registered here on 29 October 1986. According to records, the chassis B252YD was acquired on 20 September 1954 by Malcolm McAlpine, born 1918, residing at 80 Park Lane London. He had the bodywork built by E.D. Abbot of Farnham, reportedly a 2-door Saloon delivered on 6 April 1955. Somewhere along the way before coming to Sweden, the bodywork was exchanged for a 4-door Saloon, the reason unclear. This is presumably why the plate with the discrepant number B262YD is mounted on the bulkhead. The current owner acquired the car on 13 April 1987. He had it completely restored at Competition Motors in Alunda, from frame restoration to its present excellent condition, sparing no expense. On 20 October 1992 it was registered for road use in Sweden. At the 1992 inspection, when the car was newly restored, the odometer reading was 33,219 miles; it now stands at 35,768 miles. It has thus been driven only 2,549 miles = 4,104 km over more than 33 years. It has been garaged most of the time and driven only on rare occasions.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Started easily and ran smoothly in engine and drivetrain. No longer test drive was conducted as the weather was not optimal. A short drive around the yard was made, but everything appeared to function well. The owner pointed out a couple of small oil drops on the floor after garaging. It has not been checked on a lift, but it has been renovated and has been driven somewhat since then. From what could be seen, it looked good regarding vital components.

  • Interior condition

A nicely restored interior in original specification. Seats, rear seat, door panels, headliner and carpets in very fine condition in light grey. Neat and fine finish around the sunroof. Steering wheel, controls, instrument panel and gauges in fine condition. Fine wood trim. Cigar lighter at mirror, inside right C-pillar rear, missing. Everything appears to function well except one turn signal that did not work at inspection. Possibly something with the "stalk". Older radio, not tested.

  • Exterior condition

Repainted during the complete restoration over 35 years ago. Since then it has mostly been kept in a garage and driven sparingly. Repainted in Regency Red (reportedly previously a blue body). There is a small paint chip on the right front edge of the bonnet, and a small dent on the right front wing. The sunroof is pleasant and functioning well. Glass, chrome, trim, emblems and lighting details are in fine condition. Wheels, wheel caps and tyres are also in good condition, though possibly somewhat aged. Engine and boot compartments are in the same fine condition.

  • General condition

The design, condition and aura in a delightful colour combination with gleaming chrome, leather, wood and beautiful details make this a special and beautiful motorcar. Bentleys from the 1950s are popular and bear distinctive markers of the era. A fantastic classic and enthusiast's motorcar.

Facts about the model

The Bentley R-Type was the marque's second production series after World War II and was manufactured between 1952 and 1955. Bentley offered a standard body, but also bodies from various coachbuilders such as H.J. Mulliner & Co and Park Ward amongst others. The R-Type model replaced the Bentley Mark VI and was sometimes also called the Mark VII. Under the bonnet was a straight-six engine of 4.6 litres producing 130 bhp. It featured a manual four-speed gearbox as well as a four-speed automatic gearbox as an option. It was contemporary with the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, with minor differences; primarily the grille and carburettor arrangement distinguished them. Bentley sold 2,531 examples, of which 295 were externally coachbuilt, while the sister model sold only 760 examples. Bentley, with its competition history and dual SU Type H6 carburettors, had a sportier aura which contributed to sales success. Of the Bentleys built, 208 were the faster R-Type Continental version. It had the same engine but with modified carburettors, a different inlet manifold, a different exhaust manifold and a different final drive ratio. This made the version the fastest four-seater standard production car in the world – all to emphasise Bentley as a sportier motor car. The R-Type was also built in fast and streamlined coupe and cabriolet versions by various coachbuilders. In the mid-1950s the Bentley S1 model took over the baton.
