International Harvester Scout 200 5.0 — 1975

Classic American pickup truck built by a less common manufacturer in a four-wheel drive heavy duty format. In the seventies it was a fine subject for a small fire engine with a heavy-duty superstructure. Registered as a heavy truck requiring a C-class driving licence.

"Substantial road feel with a need for firm inputs on both steering wheel and gear lever."

Description

It was delivered by Lantmännen Maskin AB in Malmö to the Fire Department in Ängelholm in April 1975. The bodywork was constructed by Hebra in Vellinge. The vehicle was in service as a hose layer – equipped with 1,200 metres of hose and an Albin 200 portable class 1 water pump – for nearly 35 years with the Fire Department in Ängelholm until they sold it at Kvarndammen Bilauktioner AB in 2011. Since then it has been owned by collectors, and is currently with the present owner. As is customary with older fire engines, it has been meticulously maintained with a very low mileage, in this case just under 21,000 km. All equipment, including the siren system, is intact. The latest and therefore final approved inspection was carried out on 2025-10-15.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Four-wheel drive with a long wheelbase between full lock requires a driving style that needs a little longer anticipation. Engine and gearbox feel as low-mileage as they are, albeit with a need for deliberate gear changes. A small manifold leak is also audible. The efficiency of four-wheel drive has not been tested, but the off-road capability of a low-mileage International Harvester 200 Eight All Wheel Drive is unlikely to be so limited.

  • Interior condition

Fine and unrestored interior with all details and equipment intact. The period-correct and neatly patterned vinyl on the sofa and door panels is intact and clean, apart from a small tear on the side of the seat cushion on the right side.

  • Exterior condition

Clean and smart original paint, the delivery chassis with cab was likely ordered and delivered in a solid red color from the manufacturer. Good chrome and details. Fresh and correct Firestone tires for the model from 2015 with good tread.

  • General condition

Delightfully unrestored in its complete fire truck configuration, it is a natural choice for any collector of emergency vehicles. However, for a more unsentimental and practically minded buyer, it should be possible to remove the heavy compartment box, replace it with a lighter flatbed construction, and re-register the vehicle as a light commercial truck with a total weight under 3,500 kg.

Facts about the model

International Harvester 200 series was essentially a medium-duty truck disguised as a pickup for private use. The designation "Eight" referred to IH's characteristic V8 engines, which were renowned for their industrial durability. In May 1975, IH officially ceased manufacturing pickups and concentrated exclusively on equipment for agricultural and commercial use. This makes the 200 series – and particularly the four-wheel drive models – highly sought after among enthusiasts of classic American pickups.
