Description
The odometer reads 33,900 km, though it likely rolled over once. The son later assumed ownership, but the car has remained quietly stored for 44 years—now emerging as a fine “barn find.” Included with the vehicle are various original manuals and documents, a full set of keys, and not least, a wonderful aura and a well-documented history.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
It hasn’t been started in 44 years and its mechanical condition is uncertain, but the car appears to be complete. It was treated with undercoating, which has helped preserve the underside—it looks relatively solid underneath.
-
Interior condition
Original upholstery in fine textile, with rubber floor mats and wood trim. The seats are in good condition considering their age, though unfortunately, rodents have found their way in. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in nice shape, showing some age-related patina—not from wear, but from spending 44 years in a cold garage.
-
Exterior condition
Nice paintwork with mild patina, minor blemishes, and some signs of rust in a few areas. All or parts of the car may have been repainted at some point. Complete with good glass, chrome trim, moldings, emblems, and lighting details—including the two auxiliary lights specified in 1957. One or two trim pieces and emblems are loose but included. Most likely complete.
-
General condition
A car that has been in a Sleeping Beauty slumber in a garage—now ready for a kiss and a gentle awakening. The so-called “Ponton” bodies from 1950s Mercedes were charming vehicles, built with solid materials and high-quality craftsmanship. This one has held up well over the years but is in need of a careful inspection and recommissioning. A fine classic and a historically interesting vehicle, thanks to its ownership history and brand heritage.

Facts about the model
The following year, in June 1954, Mercedes introduced the W180 series under the model designation 220. Like the W120, it featured a unibody Ponton-style design but with a lower front end to accommodate a six-cylinder engine, similar to the older W187. The cabin and rear doors were also slightly extended, providing a roomier rear seat compared to the W120, although the luggage compartment remained the same.
In March 1956, the 220S was introduced, featuring a more powerful engine with twin dual-barrel carburetors producing just over 100 hp, along with more luxurious equipment. For the 1958–1959 model years, Mercedes also offered the 220SE, equipped with Bosch fuel injection, delivering 115 hp.
In addition, Mercedes launched a simplified version known as the 219 alongside the 220S. The reasoning behind this model is somewhat unclear, but it featured a six-cylinder engine with a single Solex carburetor producing 85 hp, and a hybrid body combining the front end of the 220S with the rear of the smaller W120/W121 models.
Production numbers for the 220S totaled 55,279 units—significantly more than the 220SE, of which only 1,974 were built, and nearly twice as many as the 219, which saw 27,845 units produced.
Both the 220S and 220SE were also offered in two-door versions—Coupé and Cabriolet. By the 1960 model year, production came to an end, and the new W111 series with its distinctive tail fins took over—but that is another story.
