"It presents well and leaves a positive overall impression."

Description

The Venom was offered in several different versions. The sporting Clubman variant featured low handlebars, rear-set foot controls, and was capable of speeds exceeding 160 km/h (100 mph). The model was later developed into the even more focused Velocette Thruxton, a highly successful competition machine that went on to win the production class at the Isle of Man TT.

For many enthusiasts, the Venom represents the pinnacle of the classic British single-cylinder sporting motorcycle. It may not be as fast or as sophisticated as the twin-cylinder machines that followed, but its character, exhaust note, and engaging mechanical feel have made it one of the most admired post-war veteran motorcycles.

To this day, it is widely regarded as one of the finest “big singles” ever built in Great Britain.

This particular example has spent recent years as part of a private collection and has now been recommissioned after a long period of inactivity, as demonstrated in the accompanying videos. The motorcycle was last inspected in 2009 and will therefore require a new roadworthiness inspection before it can be returned to regular road use.

A set of fairing components is included separately with the motorcycle; please refer to the photographs for details.

Facts about the model

The Velocette Venom 500 is one of the most celebrated British single-cylinder motorcycles ever built. Produced in Birmingham between 1955 and 1970, it was powered by an air-cooled 499cc four-stroke engine producing approximately 34 horsepower and capable of a top speed of around 160 km/h (100 mph)—highly impressive figures for its era.

The model became particularly famous for its reliability and endurance. In 1961, a factory-prepared Venom set a world record by maintaining an average speed of more than 160 km/h for 24 consecutive hours at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry in France. Remarkably, this record for a 500cc single-cylinder motorcycle still stands today.

Combining strong performance, exceptional build quality, and robust engineering, the Venom has earned its place as an icon among classic British motorcycles. Between 1955 and 1970, approximately 5,700 examples were produced, making it both a sought-after collector’s machine and one of the finest representatives of the traditional British “big single".
