"Twenty-five years ago, the Volvo 140 was still a relatively common sight, particularly in rural Sweden. Much of its longevity was due to its virtually indestructible—if somewhat old-fashioned—engineering. A four-cylinder pushrod engine, a four-speed manual gearbox, coil springs, conventional front suspension, and a solid rear axle. This was the way Volvo built its passenger cars for decades: nothing flashy or extravagant, just a well-executed product of Swedish steel and the skilled workers of Gothenburg.

This particular example would benefit from attention to its gearbox. Otherwise, it continues to do exactly what it was built to do, more than 50 years after leaving the Torslanda factory.

In summary, this is a car that, with routine maintenance and gradual improvements over time, has every potential to provide many more years of simple, everyday motoring enjoyment."

Description

This car was sold new in 1972. Although it is a 1971 model-year vehicle, it was not first registered until July 1972, suggesting that it may have been a dealer-stock car sold at a discounted price. As far as can be determined, the car has remained in the province of Värmland since new. It was first owned by a resident of Högboda, near Kil, and later by a lady in Karlstad.

In 2025, the car was offered at auction following the passing of its second owner. The current owner purchased the vehicle, replaced the left front fender, and addressed a number of minor cosmetic and mechanical issues. He also carried out a comprehensive overhaul of the braking system, fitting new brake lines, hoses, and calipers throughout.

The car successfully passed its roadworthiness inspection on May 11, 2025. Under current Swedish regulations for historic vehicles, it is now exempt from periodic inspections and road tax.

The owner has decided to pass the car on to its next enthusiast caretaker.

Included with the vehicle are the spare wheel, jack, and wheel wrench, as well as the original owner’s manual and a period first-aid kit that adds a touch of historical charm. The tow hitch is also included separately.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car is powered by Volvo’s classic four-cylinder B20 engine, here in carburetted form producing 82 horsepower. Interestingly, the B20 was the successor to Volvo’s legendary B18 engine, and this 2.0-litre unit remained in production all the way through the early years of the Volvo 240 series. Power is transmitted through the robust four-speed M40 manual gearbox.

The engine starts easily, runs smoothly, and sounds as it should. During the test drive, it felt strong, responsive, and eager to perform. There is, however, a transmission-related noise from the gearbox, most likely originating from a bearing on the layshaft. The fact that the noise diminishes when top gear is engaged supports this diagnosis. The sound can be heard as a characteristic whine in the accompanying driving video.

All brake calipers and brake hoses have recently been replaced. A slight vibration can be felt under braking, which may indicate a brake disc with minor unevenness. The car spent a long period off the road before being recommissioned in 2025 and, as a result, has seen very limited use in recent years.

It has recently been serviced with fresh oil in the engine, gearbox, and rear axle. The car is fitted with new 165/65 R15 tires. These have a slightly lower profile than the tires originally specified for the Volvo 140 series, giving the car a subtly different stance and driving feel.

  • Interior condition

The interior has survived remarkably well, showing only minor signs of wear. It is believed that protective seat covers were fitted for much of the car’s life, helping to preserve the upholstery. The headliner is clean, intact, and in very good condition, while the dashboard remains free from cracks or damage.

The car is equipped with a period-correct radio, which is reported to be in working order. A thorough professional detailing would further enhance the presentation of the interior, with the carpeting in particular likely to benefit from a deep cleaning and refresh.

  • Exterior condition

The car wears an older repaint that now shows some signs of age and use. The left front fender was replaced in 2025 and refinished to match the surrounding paintwork as closely as possible. There are also a number of localized touch-ups elsewhere on the body.

A small dent is present at the front of the car, between the grille and the bumper. One of the rear wheel arches has a minor rust repair area located midway up the inner edge, although it is not visible from the exterior.

Both spare-wheel wells have been replaced, and repairs are visible on the inner fender panels within the engine bay. Please refer to the photographs for further details.

  • General condition

A well-functioning driver-quality classic, with the only notable mechanical issue being a bearing-related noise from the transmission.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 140 was a series of large passenger cars produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo between 1966 and 1974. The range consisted of the 142 (two-door saloon), 144 (four-door saloon), and 145 (five-door estate). With total production exceeding 1.2 million units, the 140 series became Volvo’s first model range to surpass the one-million mark.

In addition to the standard models, Volvo introduced the 145 Express in 1970, a high-roof version of the 145 estate. It was intended to replace the Volvo Duett, whose production had ended in February 1969. Despite its practicality, the 145 Express never achieved the same level of success as its predecessor.

The 140 series is widely regarded as a landmark in Volvo’s history and the model range that established the template for the modern Volvo automobile. Its angular styling, spacious interior, and strong emphasis on safety became defining characteristics of the brand for decades to come.

The basic body structure of the 140 series lived on through the Volvo 240, which remained in production well into the 1990s. While the front and rear sections were redesigned over the years, the central body shell remained largely unchanged, to the extent that doors from some of the final Volvo 240 models can still be fitted to a 144 or 145 from the late 1960s.
