"Reportedly the only example in Scandinavia, this Renault 19 Baccara is a rare and intriguing find. Powered by the lively 1.8-litre engine producing 94 horsepower, it combines the practicality of a five-door hatchback with the distinctive luxury and refinement that defined Renault’s flagship Baccara specification.

This particular car is further enhanced by desirable features such as an automatic transmission and a sunroof, providing an especially comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. The vehicle presents in impeccable condition throughout, reflecting both its careful ownership history and exceptionally modest mileage of just 100,430 kilometres."

Description

This car was delivered new in France on 5 March 1993 and was originally owned by a lady in Paris. According to available information, it was brought to Sweden around 2010 by a well-known Renault enthusiast and marque specialist. At that time, the car received certification from Renault but was never formally registered for Swedish road use, instead becoming part of the owner’s private Renault collection.

When the current owner—also a respected figure within Renault enthusiast circles—acquired the car in April 2024, it was subsequently registered for road use in Sweden. Following the purchase, he commissioned a comprehensive service that included new spark plugs, filters, and fluids, as well as replacement of the timing belt and water pump. Since then, the car has covered approximately 500 kilometres.

More recently, the Renault has been fitted with new tyres on its original wheels. Accompanying the car are the Swedish owner’s manual, several service receipts from its time in France, and documentation relating to its Swedish registration. A set of wind deflectors for the front side windows is also included, although not currently fitted.

The car passed its most recent inspection in April this year without remarks and is fully roadworthy, ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily and the engine runs smoothly. During a test drive on both motorway and secondary roads, all major functions were found to operate well, including the steering, automatic transmission—with functioning kickdown as well as both Comfort and Sport modes—road holding, and braking performance.

The vehicle has not been inspected on a lift, but everything visible appeared to be in good order, and no remarks were recorded during its most recent roadworthiness inspection.

  • Interior condition

The interior is well preserved and attractively presented, with leather upholstery in fine condition and excellent comfort from both the front seats and rear bench. The door panels, dashboard, headlining, and carpets are equally well maintained, displaying only light age-related patina and gentle signs of use.

The steering wheel, controls, instruments, and gauges remain in fine, well-preserved, and functional condition. The indicator stalk did not self-cancel after turning. All electrical features appear to operate correctly, and the air conditioning blows cold.

The car retains its original moulded Renault floor mats, while the luggage compartment is exceptionally well kept and features a dedicated compartment for a garment or suit bag—an elegant detail reflecting the Baccara’s premium positioning. The electric sunroof also functions as intended.

  • Exterior condition

The car retains its original paintwork, which remains in glossy and well-preserved condition, showing only light signs of use consistent with its age and mileage. The colour is a beautiful blue-green metallic shade that subtly changes character depending on the light, enhancing the car’s distinctive appearance.

The glass, trim, badges, and lighting elements are all in fine, well-preserved condition. The attractive alloy wheels are fitted with a recent set of Michelin Energy tyres, while the engine compartment presents equally well and reflects the car’s careful preservation over the years.

  • General condition

When a French family was looking for a second car for commuting and shopping trips around Paris, a Renault 19 Baccara—with its generous equipment level and premium appointments—was an obvious choice. In Scandinavia, however, it is a rare sight indeed: a true automotive curiosity and an appealing modern classic for the enthusiast.

Ownership offers something increasingly difficult to find in the classic car world—genuine exclusivity. This is a car that is virtually guaranteed to stand alone at shows and enthusiast gatherings, attracting interest from those who appreciate the unusual and the unexpected.

Facts about the model

The Renault 19 was introduced in 1988 and was offered as a three- and five-door hatchback, a four-door saloon, and, from 1991, a two-door cabriolet built by Karmann. For the 1992 model year, the range received a facelift, most noticeably affecting the front and rear styling. In 1995, the Renault 19 was succeeded by the Renault Mégane, although production continued in Argentina until 2000 for the South American market.

Power came from a range of inline four-cylinder engines, from 1.2 to 1.8 litres, with outputs ranging from 58 to 135 horsepower in the 16-valve version. A selection of 1.9-litre diesel engines was also available.

One variant never officially sold in Sweden was the luxurious Baccara version. Positioned at the top of the range, it featured leather upholstery, upgraded instrumentation, heated seats, air conditioning, power windows, and central locking, along with unique alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. As an additional touch of refinement, Renault even equipped the Baccara with a zippered compartment beneath the parcel shelf designed to hold a garment or suit bag.

According to available information, approximately 5.9 million Renault 19s were produced, making it one of Renault’s most successful models. Today, the Baccara remains one of the rarest and most distinctive versions, combining everyday practicality with an unusually high level of comfort and equipment for its era.
