"An exciting and interesting project car. Last started and driven three years ago. Approved origin inspection. Here, the buyer decides the level of improvements.
If you’re satisfied with simply going through the essentials and driving the car in worn original condition, an experienced and interested enthusiast should be able to get it roadworthy and ready for registration inspection relatively quickly.
We know that at least the following will need attention before inspection: starter battery, brakes, electrical system check, and a service review of the drivetrain. Additional items may arise during the course of the project."

Description

The car was imported to Sweden in 1970. Its earlier history is unknown, though it is said to have been used in Bergen, Norway. We are aware of two previous owners in Sweden.

The car remained untouched from the 1970s until the early 2000s, when it was purchased by a middle-aged man living in Ed. In 2008, he carried out a minor overhaul and got the car running. He test-drove it on his property in Dalsland and decided to repair only what was strictly necessary and keep it in worn original condition.

He managed to source five NOS (“New Old Stock”) Dunlop bias-ply tires in the correct size (three are fitted to the car and two are included loose). Over the years, the car’s registration documents had been lost. With the help of an identity investigation conducted by the Swedish Motor Heritage Federation, it was possible in 2008 to apply for an origin inspection with the Swedish Transport Agency, which was approved.

At the time, there was no deadline for registering the vehicle after a successful origin inspection. The final preparations for registration inspection were delayed, and in 2025 the owner passed away. The car is now being sold by the late owner’s heirs, who feel they lack the necessary knowledge and interest to complete the project.

The car comes with specialist literature, parts as shown in the photos, and the decision confirming the approved origin inspection from 2009.

We have verified with the Swedish Transport Agency that the origin inspection is still valid. However, in the event of a change of ownership, a new fee must be paid and the agency will carry out a new assessment. Since the car has already been approved, this is rarely an issue.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with an inline six-cylinder engine of 3.2 liters, rated at 50 hp. The gearbox is a non-synchronized three-speed, where third gear was often referred to as direct drive.

Since 2009, the car has been started 3–4 times and driven short distances around the property. It was last started three years ago. No attempt has been made to start the engine ahead of the sale.

A new 6-volt starter battery is required, as the condition of the current battery is unknown. The brakes are mechanical, with force from the pedal transmitted via rods and cables to the drum brakes. We pushed the car out onto the yard for photography, and over that short distance the brakes functioned. However, a full overhaul of the braking system should be expected.

  • Interior condition

The rear seat and front seats are believed to have their original upholstery. The headliner and front door panels appear to have been replaced, likely sometime in the 1950s–1960s.
The interior shows wear consistent with age and displays older signs of rodent damage. The instrumentation is complete and well preserved. Original ignition switch with one key.
On these vehicles, the front section of the floor is made of wood between the frame rails—typical of the period. The location of the 6-volt battery can be seen beneath the floor.

  • Exterior condition

Worn paintwork with surface rust and cracking. Good outer roof in so-called pegamoid. We have inspected and felt the outer roof and believe it may have been replaced at the same time as the headliner.

The headlights are Bosch units and period-correct, though not original. The rear lights have also been replaced with other period-style lamps. Upgrading to Bosch headlights was common, as they offered a better beam pattern.

Missing exterior door handles on the right-hand side, as well as the radiator cap. Otherwise appears complete.

Three of the tires are older NOS bias-ply tires that have seen very little use, with a further two included loose. The underside has surface rust, and rust holes may also be present. Please study the photos carefully.

  • General condition

A typical “what you see is what you get” car. It has been off the road for more than 50 years, and no one has tried to make it look better than it really is. In that sense, it’s a perfect project car.

Facts about the model

Featuring a 50 hp, 194 cu. in. inline six-cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission, it helped Chevrolet reclaim first place in American sales.
