"There’s something undeniably appealing about the idea of enthusiastically driving one of the big cars from 1959. This particular example has what it takes to make that idea a reality."

Description

It was imported to Sweden in April 2012 and, according to records, has had eight owners. The current owner purchased the car in 2021 and carried out a long list of work and maintenance, detailed in one of the images. The list is written using abbreviations and shorthand, but most of it is clear—though “fetknoppar” most likely refers to grease nipples.

Despite all the work and servicing, the owner has not been able to drive it as much as intended. The most recent and last approved inspection under current regulations was carried out on November 1, 2021.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily with a deep rumble, and the gearbox shifts smoothly. On recommendation, the owner has installed a rubber primer bulb from an outboard motor—essentially a manual fuel primer—to ensure the large carburetors receive sufficient fuel before startup. The engine delivers a fitting soundtrack, complemented by the gentle sway of the substantial body. The air conditioning has been removed, though the connecting hoses remain in the engine bay.

  • Interior condition

Original interior in fresh and well-maintained condition, with intact upholstery, door panels, and headliner. The carpet may have been replaced but follows the original pattern. There is a crack in the instrument glass, though a replacement—also marked in km/h—is included.

All power windows, including the vent windows and rear window, function well except for the left rear side window. A clicking sound can be heard from the relay or motor, indicating that power is at least reaching the unit.

  • Exterior condition

Straight, clean, and rust-free. Older repaint with a slight shade difference on the roof. The car’s original color is silver metallic—code M-303-979. Chrome and bright trim are in good condition and show age appropriately, with some pitting in the cast metal and light patina on the chrome, but no dents or major damage. Minor surface rust on the window frames. Older tires with good tread.

  • General condition

The final flourish of the luxurious full-size land yachts—bigger and more extravagant than this, they never became. Its fine patinated condition invites enjoyable use, and while the owner isn’t certain how effective the cooling system is during long cruising nights, he has at least driven it to a few meets in Lysekil.

Facts about the model

Lincoln built big cars, but in 1958 they became larger than ever. A new, modern and massive look was introduced with a unibody construction. The car was so large that it had to be slightly downsized for the 1959 model year. Even so, at 5.75 meters in length and over 2 meters in width, it is by no means small or delicate, weighing in at a substantial 2,450 kg.
Three series were offered—Capri, Premiere, and, like this auction car, the top-of-the-line Continental Mk IV. The 2-door hardtop (coupé) is relatively rare, with only 1,703 units produced for the 1959 model year.
