"Germany’s equivalent of the Volvo 240. A hugely popular model among younger enthusiasts for styling projects involving air suspension, aggressive wheels, and period tuning culture. Presented here as a low-mileage, single-owner example in arguably the most attractive color available — Indian Red Pearl.

This car has been driven carefully for only 12,400 kilometers since new. When the original owner purchased it in 1996, she could hardly have imagined that nearly 30 years later it would be regarded as a desirable collector’s item.

Before being put back into regular use, the buyer should expect to carry out a thorough mechanical inspection including a timing belt replacement and full service. The car now qualifies as a historic vehicle and benefits from the special regulations applicable to cars more than 30 years old.

It will be fascinating to see whether the next owner chooses to preserve its almost uniquely low-mileage originality or transform it into a true showstopper. For the forward-thinking buyer, this could very well become one of the finds of the year."

Description

What if you could find a low-mileage Volkswagen Passat B4 in the striking Indian Red Pearl color? One that has barely been driven and shows less than 13,000 kilometers on the odometer — surely that cannot exist anymore? Well, this is exactly what Bilweb Auctions is now offering for sale on behalf of the Swedish Inheritance Fund.

The car was purchased new in 1996 by a woman living in Timrå. Between July 1996 and August 2012, the car covered only 12,400 kilometers. During its final years in use, it traveled merely 2–3 kilometers per year, essentially only the distance between her home and the vehicle inspection station.

In the spring of 2025, the owner passed away at the age of 93. By then, the car had remained untouched in her garage since 2012. As the owner had a dog, there are still some traces of this inside the car, and a thorough interior detailing is recommended. The exterior would also benefit from paint correction and detailing, which would make the car present even better. Prior to the photography session, the car was cleaned out inside and hand-washed outside the garage, having accumulated dust during its 14 years in storage. No further detailing work has been carried out — in short, what you see is exactly what you get.

(The final image in the gallery shows an example of a customized Passat B4 in the Red Pearl color.)

This is a remote auction. The photographs, visual observations, and information regarding the car’s technical condition have been provided by representatives handling the estate on behalf of the Swedish Inheritance Fund. Bilweb Auctions has therefore not inspected the vehicle on site at the seller’s location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with a 1.8-liter fuel-injected engine producing 90 horsepower, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox and air conditioning.

After consultation with workshop personnel, it was decided not to attempt starting the car during the photography session. The timing belt needs to be replaced first — not because of the mileage, but due to its age. We did not want to risk catastrophic engine damage. Prospective buyers should therefore expect to carry out a full service and mechanical inspection before attempting to start the car.

The car rolled very freely when pushed out for photography. However, the brakes should also be inspected and serviced as a precaution. A new 12-volt starter battery is required, as external power was temporarily connected in order to read the odometer. The tires are also, in all likelihood, the original ones from 1996 and must be replaced with new, fresh tires before the car is put back into use.

  • Interior condition

The car is in very good overall condition. There are some traces of the owner’s dog inside the vehicle, and dog hair may still remain on the rear seat. The interior has received only a basic cleaning and would benefit from a thorough detailing in order to fully return to its best presentation.

  • Exterior condition

The car retains its original paintwork from 1996. Having always been stored indoors, the finish has avoided fading from sun exposure. There are a few isolated marks on the bumpers along with some light surface scratches in the paint. Overall, it is remarkably free from blemishes considering that the car has in fact been used. With a proper professional paint correction and detailing, the finish should absolutely sparkle in the sunlight once again.

  • General condition

For the right buyer, this is a dream car: one owner and only 12,400 Swedish kilometers from new. Once the next owner has carefully detailed and serviced the car to the highest standards, the eternal question will inevitably arise — drive it or preserve it?

Facts about the model

In November 1993, Volkswagen unveiled the new Passat B4. The car featured so many updates that it received its own model designation, despite fundamentally being a facelift of the B3 generation. The most noticeable visual changes included the return of a proper front grille, new headlights, and a redesigned rear section with softer, more rounded lines.

The interior was also updated, most notably with a new dashboard featuring a more modern appearance. Through various engineering improvements, the body shell became stiffer, enhancing both driving dynamics and occupant safety.

The model was produced between 1993 and 1996, while the estate version remained in production until 1997.
