Description
This is an original Swedish-sold 220 SE Coupé with only two registered owners.
It was first brought into Sweden in 1959 and later fully registered and sold to its first private owner in 1965, who kept the car until 2011. Given how few examples were imported when new — and their high price at the time — it is likely the car was initially held by a Mercedes dealer as a display or showroom piece.
Its rarity today speaks for itself: only 16 other Coupés remain registered in Sweden.
Unfortunately, little is known about the first owner, but the current owner acquired the car in 2011. By that time it had already been renovated, most likely in the early 2000s. The previous inspection from 2001 recorded a mileage of 95,300 km.
The car has recently been at the workshop, as the owner wanted it sold with a fresh inspection. It had not been inspected for some time and has been driven very little in recent years due to illness.
We have carried out the following work, and the car has now passed its inspection with no remarks:
Start-up service and general review
Materials
Ball socket, gear linkage
Fuel filter gasket
Used brake cylinders, front and rear
Used front brake shoes
Repair kit, right front wheel cylinder
Brake fluid
A few small jobs remain: the ball socket on the top side of the gearbox should be replaced. The gearbox shifts fine, but when pulling away in first or reverse at low revs, you need to hold the gear lever in place; all other gear changes work without issue afterwards. The exhaust system needs a slight alignment, and there is a light knock from the rear suspension over bumps—likely a worn bushing. None of these items were noted in the inspection.

Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The engine starts quickly once the fuel pump has built pressure (about 10 seconds, normal for these models). It runs smoothly with no noises, and after a short warm-up it’s ready to drive.
At low revs in first and reverse you need to hold the gear lever for a second or two; after that, all gears shift normally. The upper ball socket on the gearbox needs replacing—an inexpensive parts, though slightly tricky to access.
The car feels stable on the road, with a light knock from the rear over bumps, likely bushes or minor exhaust alignment. The engine bay is clean, well-kept, and leak-free. The block appears to be a Mercedes replacement unit, as it is unstamped. -
Interior condition
Opening the doors, you’re greeted by wonderful red leather seats with matching carpets, a wooden dashboard, gleaming chrome details, and a wool headliner — an extremely comfortable place to be. The leather is in good condition overall, with only a small loose seam on the driver’s seat cushion and on the lower rear section (see picture), both easy fixes. The rest of the seats show only light age-related creasing.
The headliner, carpets, panels, and door cards are all in great condition. The wooden dashboard and chrome trim are excellent, and the steering wheel is undamaged. All gauges work apart from the temperature gauge, and even the radio is functioning. -
Exterior condition
This is a wonderfully presentable car in all respects. The bodywork is straight with no dents, damage or visible rust, and the panels fit well. The underside is clean and solid with no rust issues; the front left frame rail shows signs of an older repair, carried out properly.
The paintwork looks great in its two-tone red and black, likely resprayed 20+ years ago. The paint code plate was not refitted after repainting. All chrome is shiny and undamaged, with only slight oxidation on the rear bumper. Other minor notes include a small stone chip in the windscreen, a slightly dull area near the rear window panel, and a small mark on the front left wing (see pictures) — none of which are noticeable unless you look very closely. -
General condition
This is an iconic late-1950s coupe, full of style and presence. It’s a true head-turner on the road, and you instantly feel its elegance when driving it. These cars are extremely hard to find for sale today — and even more so the SE version with fuel injection.
