"A car for those who want to fulfill their childhood dream of becoming a police officer."

Description

This Saab has served as a "police car" within the Stockholm County Police Department. It was built by ANA Special Vehicles, so many modifications were made to suit the police requirements. Much of the equipment functions, including features like emergency lights, sirens, and Triptrack, which is an average speed calculator used to estimate the speed of a preceding vehicle, among other purposes. Other equipment such as a foldable warning sign and an emergency hammer are also included. The car is NOT permitted to be used on public roads with emergency lights and police equipment. (In Sweden) At around 148 000 km, the car received a new timing chain kit and a refurbished cylinder head. In 2022, a new turbo was installed, along with new Powerflex bushings in the front subframe and shock absorbers according to police specifications, as the car was not originally equipped with these. Some equipment, including a skid plate, has been removed by a previous owner. This specific car features leather seats, which is uncommon for police cars from Saab. The car comes with extensive documentation of repairs and parts purchases.

Facts about the model

The Saab 9-5 replaced the old Saab 9000 as Saab's largest car. The Saab 9-5 features the classic Saab design elements and also introduced a historically unusual wagon model for Saab. Since the discontinuation of the Saab 95 in 1978, Saab had not produced a wagon until the introduction of the 9-5 Combi in 1998. The design development was led by Einar J. Hareide.

Technically, the engines and transmissions were similar to those used in the Saab 9000. The Saab 9-5 was based on the Opel Vectra platform and featured a split rear axle, which was a first for Saab. When it was first released, the car had soft suspension, providing good ride comfort but somewhat questionable handling in critical situations. However, this was improved upon quickly.

The interior of the Saab 9-5 was perceived as very modern at the time, featuring features such as the "Night Panel" that allowed the driver to dim all instruments except the speedometer during nighttime driving. Similar to the Saab 9-3, the ignition key was located between the front seats. Compared to the 9-3, the 9-5 offered significantly better space and ride comfort, although the exterior dimensions did not differ much.

The Saab 9-5, especially its wagon version, enjoyed great success in Sweden and remained at the top of the sales statistics for many years. It has also been consistently ranked as one of the safest cars in Sweden by Folksam insurance company.
