"This is how most of our Volvo Amazons looked after having been used as everyday cars in Norrland for a decade or so. In Norrland, salted roads were an unknown concept in those days. The fantastic thing about this car is that it is still in the same condition. It has evidently had attentive owners who have taken good care of it. An older repaint that still holds up well, although there are of course blemishes, and an untouched interior. This car is a piece of rolling cultural heritage, or a "folkhem" in working-order condition, one might venture to say. The car was last inspected by the Swedish vehicle inspection in 2017 and is now exempt from inspection. Continued maintenance with servicing and minor improvements along the way is the recommendation."

Description

The car was purchased new in October 1961 by a gentleman residing in Gällivare. Mr. Andersson, whose title was health insurance office clerk, bought a Volvo Amazon featuring a major novelty under the hood, namely the newly developed B18 engine. The output of the new engine was now a full 74 horsepower, compared to the earlier B16 engine's more modest 60 horsepower. The B18 engine also offered 25 percent more torque and 5 percent lower fuel consumption than the B16. In addition, the Amazon had now received a better, more reliable and modern 12-volt electrical system. We conclude that Mr. Andersson was very pleased with his new car. It appears that he kept it all the way until 1973. The car then passed to a Mr. Martinsson in the same town. We conclude that Mr. Martinsson was even more pleased with his choice of car, as he kept his Amazon for no less than 41 years. In 2014 the car went to its third owner in Bjurholm. The current owner acquired the car in 2018 and has used it as a summer car ever since.
The car is now being sold due to the owner's age, with the hope that it will find a good home.
The car comes with the original registration certificate from 1961, the owner's manual, as well as a spare wheel and the original jack. 1 set of car keys is included.

This is a distance auction. The photos and information about the vehicle and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not inspected the car on site at the seller's location.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Equipped with the big news for 1961, the 75-horsepower B18 engine, and also fitted with a fully synchronized four-speed gearbox. Starts easily and runs normally for a B18. 12-volt electrical system with the original DC generator. Aftermarket-type air filter.

  • Interior condition

Complete and attractive interior. Considering the unworn condition of the seats, it is reasonable to assume that the car previously had protective seat covers fitted. The headliner is also in fine condition, although there are some moisture stains on the C-pillars and the occasional mark. The door panels are in normal, good condition. It appears that hazard flashers have been retrofitted for added safety. The floor mats are textile and of a later style; originally the car should have full rubber floor mats, but these tend to crack with age and are no longer reproduced. The trunk is also in unusually good condition for an unrestored car.

  • Exterior condition

The car has an older repaint from the 1980s. The paint has held up well and is in unusually fine driver condition given its age. The rocker panels have been touched up and show a slightly different shade. The lower edges of the front fenders show visibly poorer prep work from touch-up painting. More modern whitewall tires have been fitted, which suits this model well.

During the 1980s repaint, newer grille halves were fitted, which was a common practice to give the car a more modern look. The current owner has reinstalled the correct type of grille. Unfortunately, a perfect fit of the grille has not been achieved, making this a suitable first project for the buyer to address. Equipped with period-correct Marschal auxiliary lights. The chrome bumpers and brightwork trim are in good driver condition.

  • General condition

Unrenovated car with a solid feel. Only an older repaint has been carried out; otherwise it appears to be completely intact and relatively untouched since new.
