Beschreibung
There is no service documentation, but the owner maintained the car with the help of mechanically skilled friends. The odometer reading cannot be verified, nor is it clear whether the entire gauge was replaced and adjusted to the correct mileage or if only the dial has been changed.
The car has been driven less than 500 km over the past 10 years. The most recent—and therefore final—approved inspection under current regulations was carried out on June 11, 2018.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand
-
Zustand technisch
The engine starts eagerly and delivers a lively feel—its 170 hp on paper certainly feels accurate in real driving, perhaps even a bit more. The gearbox, brakes, and clutch all work well together with the engine’s character. A refresh of the engine bay, as well as the trunk, would bring them up to the same standard as the rest of the car.
-
Zustand Interieur
A nice and well-presented interior with fresh MB-Tex seats. Good carpets, door panels, and dashboard. The steering wheel has a small crack on the right-hand spoke. The desirable vintage Becker radio is not working or may not be connected.
The soft top is in dark blue Sonnenland fabric and in good condition overall, though the rear window is slightly discolored and there are two small areas of wear that should be possible to repair relatively discreetly. -
Zustand Exterieur
An older repaint in good condition, carried out in Sweden shortly after import. The all-red tail lights, sealed beam headlights, diagonal two-point seatbelt, and the two-line rear license plate all reflect the car’s early American history. Original steel wheels with fine hubcaps and older Michelin MXT tires with good tread. Hardtop in original paint with a small scratch on the top, and a well-preserved headliner.
-
Zustand gesamt
A representative and positive overall impression—a reliable and well-cared-for Pagoda, ready to be enjoyed for hopefully many more miles than in recent years.

Fakten zum Modell
The design is often attributed to the renowned stylist Paul Bracq, active during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but project leaders Karl Wilfert and Friedrich Geiger were just as instrumental in the creation of the Pagoda model, internally known as the W113.
Technically, the car is based on the contemporary sedan generation—the “Fintail” W110/111—but with a wheelbase shortened by 35 centimeters. The engine, a tuned version of the passenger car unit, the rear swing axle, and the consistently high build quality were some of its defining features. At the same time, it marked a complete stylistic departure from its predecessors, the 190 SL and the extreme 300 SL.
The W113 was more of a true sports car than the 190 SL ever was, while still being more accessible to a wider audience than the race-bred 300 SL. Suddenly, the earlier SL models appeared quite outdated. The new series was a modern, fast, and high-quality grand tourer for two, offering ample luggage space and great comfort—yet fully capable of more spirited driving.
Three engine variants were offered during the model’s production run from 1963 to 1971. Of these, the 230 SL is often considered the most agile. Its engine has a lively character, and the unique metal bushings in the suspension contribute to a sharper driving feel. In the later 280 SL, these were replaced with rubber bushings, increasing comfort. The 230 SL also introduced semi-belted tires, a technical innovation designed to provide both grip and the level of comfort expected by Mercedes customers.
