"It exudes a certain refined sense of utility, a feeling of having been sensibly maintained throughout the years. A Mark 1 to cherish and enjoy driving extensively."

Beschreibung

It was delivered to the first owner in September 1959, paint merchant Gillis Green in Skara, by Fredlunds Automobil AB in Stockholm. There is extensive interesting documentation and Green kept detailed notes. Although based in Skara, the car was serviced by the Stockholm dealer in the early years. When Gillis ordered his Mark 1, black was not his first choice of colour, but he had to accept what was available. Therefore, the car was repainted in white in the first year and that is the paint it still has today. During much of the seventies the car appears to have been stored and in 1979 Bengt Mörner in Gothenburg purchased it. Mörner was a veteran car enthusiast in the city with a particular taste for English cars. He was meticulous with the maintenance and upkeep of this example throughout the years, and the car is well-known in enthusiast circles. The current owner purchased it in 2005 and has exercised the car every summer, including on tours abroad in England, Germany, Belgium, Holland and France. He has maintained it and fitted both good and sensible minor upgrades. The odometer reads just over 98,000 km, but it has likely turned over once. The last and final approved inspection was carried out on 13 September 2016, when the car was in an approved period as the new regulations came into effect on 20 April 2018.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

It is an impressive power output from the straight-six, even by today's standards. The gear positions are close together, but it is a pleasant habit for a new driver to learn and once mastered, one appreciates the feel. And that makes the driving pleasure clearer and greater. The current owner has installed electronic ignition, manual choke control and electric cooling fan, and an ammeter that indicates and monitors the engagement of the overdrive. He has also overhauled the carburettors a couple of years ago. The car is equipped with a stainless steel exhaust system.

  • Zustand Interieur

Beautiful and well-preserved leather interior of classic English design with carpets, headliner and door panels in fine condition. The walnut panelling is also a fine piece of craftsmanship. An unworked and unlacquered spare panel for the instrument cluster is included for possible future use. An extra negative-earth 12V socket hangs conveniently within reach at the driver's position. The car has a Lucas positive-earth 12V electrical system, that brand was early with 12V and it was already available in the thirties.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The first owner had the car repainted already in the first year, and the white paint that the car has today was applied in 1960 or 1961. Minor marks from normal wear and a generally charming well-used exterior. Older substantial Vredestein tyres, the chrome rings for the steel wheels are not fitted due to the balance weights.

  • Zustand gesamt

Genuine Jaguar of a somewhat uncommon early model in pleasant working condition with mechanical reliability. This in turn provides a usability that invites enthusiasts to use it frequently during the summer season.

Fakten zum Modell

The Jaguar 3.4 Litre – later retroactively called the Mark 1 – was launched in 1957 as a more powerful development of the 2.4-litre model, which was two years older. The car was Jaguar's first fully monocoque construction and marked the marque's entry into the segment for smaller, sporting premium saloons. The big innovation was the installation of the legendary XK straight-six of 3.4 litres, equipped with dual camshafts and dual carburettors with a stated output of 210 bhp. The performance was remarkable for its time, with a top speed approaching 200 km/h, which quickly made the car a favourite in standard car racing. Moreover, both the police and criminals ranked it highly. The model was offered with either a manual gearbox with overdrive or a three-speed automatic gearbox from Borg-Warner. From autumn 1958 the car was equipped with disc brakes all round as standard, which significantly improved safety. The interior was characterised by classic British luxury with walnut panels and leather upholstery. When production ceased in 1959 to make way for the Mark 2, nearly 17,400 examples of the 3.4-litre version had been built, and the model had cemented Jaguar's reputation for delivering fast, elegant and good-value sports cars under the motto "Grace, Space, Pace".
