Volvo 760 GLE 2,8 V6 — 1989

Back in its day, the Volvo 760 was driven by business executives and the upper middle class alike. "Who could have imagined that the Volvo 760 — once the luxury car of its era — would proudly wear historic vehicle status nearly 40 years later? This particular car spent its life on Lidingö with a caring family until 2015, when it became part of the collection at Kils Bilmuseum. The museum’s owner has invested substantial sums into further improving the car.

Today, only a few minor cosmetic imperfections remain, providing just the right amount of work for the next owner. Apart from a troublesome fuel gauge and a future inspection of the air conditioning system, the car is fully roadworthy. It carries a valid inspection approval until November 30, 2027. Simply turn the key and drive it home."

Beschreibung

This car remained within the same family from new in 1989 until 2015, when it became part of the collection at Kils Bilmuseum. The car was originally purchased in 1989 by a gentleman living on Lidingö. He was a distinguished Swedish geologist and, during his lifetime, was regarded as Sweden’s leading authority on geotechnical studies related to construction in rock, particularly tunnels and underground facilities. In 1989, he chose Volvo’s flagship model, the 760. An automatic gearbox, air conditioning, and a sunroof were considered essential options when the car was ordered. Whenever the car was not in use, it was always kept in the family’s garage and carefully maintained.

In 2003, the owner passed away at the age of 84, although ownership of the car had already been transferred to his wife in 1993. The car saw increasingly little use, and in 2015 the widow contacted Urban Jonsson at Kils Bilmuseum. She owned two cars and felt that it was time to retire her Volvo 760. She had read articles about Kils Bilmuseum and its collection of fine Volvos. Urban recalls that during the visit to Lidingö, it became clear that the most important thing for her was that the car would end up in “a good home.”

When Urban brought the car back to Kil, he carried out a thorough inspection, servicing, and a number of improvements. The starter motor was the first component to be replaced, as this is a known weak point on the PRV engine. Both the windshield and rear window were replaced, and at the same time the headliner was removed and retrimmed with new material. At the time of acquisition, the engine suffered from an oil leak from the timing cover, which was removed in order to replace the gasket. During the same period, the air conditioning system was refurbished. More recently, the brakes have also been overhauled, with the brake calipers lubricated and new pads installed.

In November 2025, the car passed inspection without remarks and is approved for road use until November 30, 2027. Everything on the car functions properly except for the air conditioning system and an intermittent issue with the fuel gauge.

According to the Swedish Transport Agency, the car has had four registered owners. This is somewhat misleading: the first registration was the dealership, the second owner was the original purchaser, the third was his wife, and the fourth is Kils Bilmuseum (Urban Jonsson). In reality, the car has effectively had only two actual users — the original owner and his wife.

The service book is stamped by Bilia up to 160,000 kilometers. After that, the car was serviced by a smaller workshop that did not stamp the service booklet.

The car is now being sold on behalf of Kils Bilmuseum due to lack of space in the collection. Do not be discouraged by the fact that the car has covered 310,000 kilometers. With some attention to the exterior cosmetic imperfections and a review of the air conditioning system, this is a genuinely fine Volvo 760 that today proudly qualifies as a historic vehicle.

The spare wheel, jack, tools, and owner’s manual are included. However, only one ignition key accompanies the car.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The car is equipped with the legendary PRV engine — a 2.8-liter V6 developed jointly by Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo — paired with an automatic transmission and air conditioning. In Volvo specification, this V6 is said to produce 147 horsepower.

During a short test drive in an industrial area, both the engine and gearbox performed well, with no unusual noises or vibrations detected. The air conditioning system was not functioning. Urban at the museum believes that a simple recharge of refrigerant may be sufficient, as the system was refurbished when the car entered the collection. However, this cannot be guaranteed. An oil service has also recently been carried out now that the car has been brought back into use.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is in generally good condition relative to the car’s age and mileage. Remarkably little wear is evident considering it has covered 310,000 kilometers. There are, however, some unfortunate stains in the center section of the rear seat — please refer to the photos.

The headliner was replaced approximately ten years ago during the museum’s refurbishment of the car. There are also a few scuff marks on the dashboard near the glove compartment. The carpet in the trunk is dirty and would benefit from a thorough cleaning or professional shampooing to restore its appearance.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car presents a very good overall exterior impression. There are a few minor blemishes in the form of surface rust around the rear wheel arches, primarily near the left rear lower quarter panel (“dog leg”). There are also a few small paint chips from stone impacts. Nothing major, but please study the photographs carefully for further details.

A small container of touch-up paint is included with the car. However, no attempts have been made to “cover up” or conceal anything, meaning the exterior remains exactly as it appeared when the car entered the museum collection in 2015.

The car is fitted with older Michelin Energy tires.

  • Zustand gesamt

A representative Volvo 760 with the potential to become even finer with only minor improvements. Owned and used by just a single family throughout its life.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

Volvo’s luxury flagship, the 760, was launched in 1982 and simultaneously formed the foundation of an entirely new model range. Much of the underlying engineering was derived from the 240 and 260 series, but both the chassis and the bodywork — designed by Jan Wilsgaard’s styling team — were completely new.

At launch, the 760 was offered with two engine choices: the six-cylinder PRV petrol engine and the all-new TD24, a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel. The latter earned the Volvo 760 the distinction of being Europe’s fastest diesel-powered passenger car for a considerable period. In 1983, Volvo also introduced the B23 — a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine — which was later replaced by the B230ET and, from 1989 onward, the B230FT.

In 1988, the facelifted version was introduced with a more modern front end and hood design, distinguishing it more clearly from the 740 while also making it visually closer to its successor, the 960. The major technical innovation for 1988, however, was the sophisticated Multilink rear suspension, fitted exclusively to the sedan model.

The Volvo 760 remained in production until 1990, when it was succeeded by the Volvo 960.
