"A proud and handsome G-series PV, equipped with everything the Sport model offered at the time — and more."

Beschreibung

After a Volvo employee won the car in an internal lottery, in which a PV from the final G-series was raffled off, Volvo dealer Georg Brandts Bil AB in Dingle, north of Uddevalla, was commissioned to sell the car. It was delivered in August 1966 to its first owner in Uddevalla, who had it rustproofed after just 200 kilometres.

He used the PV until the end of 1972 and covered approximately 95,000 kilometres during those years, accounting for the majority of the car’s current total mileage of 123,190 kilometres. The odometer has therefore rolled over once and currently reads 23,190 kilometres.

The car was traded back in to the same dealer in Dingle, where its second owner purchased the PV in January 1973. This owner soon lost his driving licence following an evening at a local hotel, and between 1973 and 1999 the PV covered no more than around 17,000 kilometres. It was eventually removed from the vehicle register after the owner failed to pay the required registration retention fee.

In May 1999, the current owner purchased the car and began the process of carefully refining it. He registered it for road use again in 2004, and its most recent and final approved inspection was carried out on 8 September 2017.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine has been upgraded in keeping with the owner’s preferences and the tuning ideals of the period, featuring twin carburettors, a K camshaft, a ported and skimmed cylinder head, a lightened flywheel and, of course, an extractor manifold feeding into a 2-inch exhaust system.

According to the owner, the engine produces around 130 hp — considerably more than an original Sport model. The chassis and brakes feel tight, solid and well sorted.

  • Zustand Interieur

The original interior remains in very nice, largely untouched condition, including the door cards, carpets and headlining. There is a small crack on the upper right-hand side of the dashboard.

The current owner has also added a number of classic period accessories to the interior. The Blaupunkt radio, however, has been with the car since an early stage and still works well.

  • Zustand Exterieur

An older repaint that still presents very well, with a neat and tidy overall finish. The car has never required any welding since leaving the factory, although two new rear wings were fitted after the second owner found his garage a little too tight on a few occasions.

It rides on Michelin tyres from 2003 with plenty of tread remaining, mounted on attractive and classically wide 5.5-inch wheels. Period accessories include an insect screen in front of the grille and four large, rally-inspired Marchal auxiliary lights.

And the door handles do not droop — according to the owner, that would be an unforgivable sin.

  • Zustand gesamt

A deliberate, careful and well-executed refinement of an already very good base car. Attractive to look at and enjoyable to drive, with much of the extra-equipped driving pleasure associated with the period built into it.

Fakten zum Modell

The 1966 model year of the Volvo PV was originally intended to remain in production until the start of the Swedish industrial summer holiday in 1966. However, demand for the new Volvo 140 proved greater than expected, and management quickly decided to begin converting the production line for the new model.

The launch of the 140, which was to enter production as a 1967 model, could not be delayed. As a result, the Volvo PV 544 G-series was produced for only around two months before the final PV rolled off the production line on 26 October 1966.

This is also why G-series cars are rarer and more sought after today. In addition, they featured a number of improvements that were unique to this final model year.
