"With restrained luxury but solidly equipped for its time, this is a comfortable premium car. Electric sunroof, power windows, heated seats, central locking, power-adjustable mirrors, cruise control, rear air suspension, tow hitch, etc. In addition, the renowned quality of the Mercedes S-Class. Despite being 40 years old, the feeling remains in both the overall package and the details."

Description

This car was registered for traffic in Sweden in June 1986. It has had three owners, with the most recent since February 1996. In the initial years, it served as a commuter car between Sörmland and Stockholm. Later, for over 25 years, it has been an enthusiast's vehicle and a member of Nyköping's Motor Veterans club. Most of the car is in its original condition, but it has naturally undergone routine servicing and maintenance over the years, along with a few upgrades. It has passed inspection and is ready to drive, equipped with a tow hitch. Original molded rubber floor mats, original manuals, completed service booklet, literature, inspection reports, and receipts are included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily and runs smoothly in both the engine and drivetrain. The brakes are in good condition. During the test drive, the ride felt calm and dignified, typical of a Mercedes S-Class. There was some noise from the fan belt initially, but it subsided after the car had been driven for a while. While it was not inspected on a lift, the visible vital components appeared to be in good condition. However, there were signs of rust around the rocker panels. The air suspension system has been disconnected, but all parts are still in place. The rear shock absorbers are new (non-air). The rear brakes are relatively new as well.

  • Interior condition

The interior is beautiful and well-maintained, with excellent quality and comfort in the seats and rear bench. The door panels and other trim pieces are in great condition. Similarly, the instrumentation, dashboard, and wood trim are well preserved in their original state. All electrical components appear to be functional (air suspension system disconnected). The headliner is in excellent condition. The fabric floor mats are in good shape, along with the original rubber floor mats from Mercedes-Benz. The functionality of the stereo is uncertain, possibly due to oxidation on the connections. The small latch for the first aid kit compartment has come loose but is included in the box.

  • Exterior condition

The paintwork is glossy and in original condition, except for the hood and one front fender that have been repainted due to stone chips, etc. Possibly, one door has also been repaired at a previous time. The glass, rubber, and plastic details are glossy and in excellent original condition. The wheels are in good condition, paired with Falken tires. The engine and trunk compartments are in good condition considering their age. However, there was some water in the trunk when the car was left outside on one occasion last autumn (otherwise always kept in the garage).

  • General condition

A well-maintained Swedish original car, which offers Mercedes quality and the feeling of the 80s, a classic cruiser car that also possesses performance - when needed. There are details to address, but overall, it's a fine classic and collector's car.

Facts about the model

Mercedes S-Class has embodied luxury, chrome, and performance since the 1950s. The Mercedes W126 was produced from 1979 to 1991. The development was led by Mercedes' chief of development, Bruno Sacco. It was a further development of the previous W116 model.

The entire design was lower, sleeker, and more aerodynamic than its predecessor. The engines featured aluminum blocks instead of cast iron. Engines were available in both six and eight cylinders. This was the first model to feature airbags and ABS brakes from Mercedes. Many other aspects were also aerodynamically and ergonomically designed for lower fuel consumption and better safety. The model was built with various updates until 1991.
