"A delightful car overall. Classic sound, slightly enhanced through the dual exhaust system. A sensible owner who has preserved the original exterior and interior condition while thoroughly going through all the technical aspects."

Description

This is a genuine Monte Carlo 850 that has spent most of its life in Jämtland, though it was later sold to a Saab engineer in Krokom, Värmland. The car is an original example with a nice patina, where the owner chose to refurbish the mechanical components while being careful with the exterior, where the paint has only been polished.

Inside, the classic Saab wooden sport steering wheel is in place, along with all the other features such as the luxury interior with a headrest only for the passenger, the clock with a second hand, the tachometer, and the minimalist rear seat unique to the Saab Sport and its successor, the Monte Carlo.

As this is a Monte Carlo with the correct three-cylinder, two-stroke engine of 841 cc, it has separate oil lubrication. As it should, it is also equipped with a four-speed gearbox, a unique electrical system, and four-bolt wheels for quicker wheel changes during rally competitions.

According to the current owner, the car remained within the same family for a long time before coming into his possession in 2007. However, its earlier history is difficult to verify, as the car once fell out of the vehicle registry.

After purchase, all mechanical components were restored. Among other things, the gearbox was rebuilt with new bearings and synchro rings. The engine was also refurbished but did not require boring. Together with a restored front suspension and new brakes, this is now a technically very sound Monte Carlo offered for sale. The windshield was replaced in 2021, and the radiator, water pump, and hoses have been refurbished. The rear end cover and oil membrane have been replaced as well. Since the restoration, the car has covered 450 kilometers, and the only deviation from original specification is the exhaust system, where the original dual setup has been replaced with a single two-inch system.

Facts about the model

The Saab Sport was the performance version of the Saab 96 – the successor to the GT750.

The predecessor, the GT750, had been aimed at the U.S. market, but now a performance model was finally available for the Swedish market as well.

The Saab Sport, introduced at the Stockholm Motor Show in 1962, shared the same basic body as the standard 96 but had a much sportier appearance, featuring dual chrome strips along the lower body, auxiliary lights, and different hubcaps. The Sport was equipped with a larger 841 cc engine and a triple-carburetor setup, which increased the output of the two-stroke engine to 52 hp. Compared to the standard model, the Sport also had separate oil lubrication, eliminating the need to mix oil with the fuel. It came with a four-speed gearbox and front disc brakes, and the wheels were four-bolt instead of the standard model’s five-bolt design.

The Saab Sport sold well in the U.S., and from 1964 it was renamed Monte Carlo 850 to capitalize on Erik Carlsson’s “on the roof” successes in the Monte Carlo Rally. In 1966, the Saab Sport name was discontinued, and the car was marketed as the Monte Carlo 850 in all markets.

Early 1967 models were still sold with the two-stroke engine, but later that year it was replaced by a standard V4, and the model was then called the Monte Carlo V4.
