"One of only a few produced—and one of even fewer still in existence today. A largely complete project that should be relatively straightforward to get back on the road."

Description

Much of the history surrounding this Mercedes has unfortunately been lost over the years. However, this does not diminish the fact that it is an impressive car, proudly carrying its nearly 100 years of age. It is now being sold on behalf of an estate, but before his passing, the owner told Bilweb Auctions that he acquired the car when purchasing a company in which it was included. The seller at the time is said to have been a widow living by Bråviken, outside Norrköping.

A rear license plate from the old county-letter system bears the registration number E 6500, indicating that the car was registered in Östergötland. After the purchase, it was reportedly taken to the Öland Car Museum in 1989 and has since been loaned to several car museums over the years.

For many years, the owner did not have the time or opportunity to work on the car, but in the past six months he carried out several improvements. He had new curtains made, which are now ready to be installed, and also worked on the car’s electrical system. Sadly, he passed away before everything was completed.

Most parts for the car appear to be present, with the exception of the front bumper. The interior presents very well, and includes what appear to be newly made carpets. There are also several boxes of spare parts and some original tools; among these, an ignition key is said to be included.

In the available documentation, the car is referred to as a Mercedes-Benz 300 from 1926, a model with the internal code W03. However, the chassis plate indicates that it is in fact a W04, as the engine displacement corresponds to that model—meaning it is a Mercedes-Benz 320 from 1928.

No registration documents are available, and the Mercedes is being sold unregistered.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine has not been started for many years but appears to be complete. The radiator shows signs of leakage. As no test drive has been possible, the gearbox, clutch, brakes, and instruments have not been tested.

The electrical system has been partially replaced and is not fully connected. The steering wheel has come loose, but the car can still be steered to some extent when being moved by hand.

  • Interior condition

The leather upholstery on the front seat shows signs of use but is intact. The door panels are in good used condition. The door check straps on the front and rear doors on the right-hand side are loose. Kick panels or trim pieces appear to be missing in the area in front of the front doors.
The rear passenger compartment features a fine and intact fabric interior, although the rear door panels are somewhat dirty. The headliner appears to be intact, and the carpets are newly made, though at the time of inspection it was not fully possible to confirm their exact fit and correctness.

  • Exterior condition

The paintwork on the body may be somewhat dull and show scratches, but this Mercedes still presents as an elegant vehicle. The front bumper is missing. The fenders appear to have been repainted, while the rest of the body likely has an older finish—possibly even the original paint. There are several scratches, and in some areas the paint has flaked off (see images).
The doors, which are partly made of wood, have lost some paint on the lower inner sections. Rust is mainly present on the front suspension components, but as these are made of thick material, it does not affect functionality. The running boards appear to be newly made, and the undercarriage is in good and very clean condition, suggesting that the car has been partially restored.

  • General condition

A Mercedes-Benz produced in limited numbers nearly 100 years ago, and now likely one of only a few remaining. A very promising project that should be possible to get back on the road with a relatively modest effort. The chassis plate and registration number will be key to completing the origin verification and registration inspection process.

Facts about the model

Mercedes-Benz became the new brand name in 1926 following the merger. Cars under the Mercedes name had been produced since 1901 by Daimler, while the history of the Benz brand dates back to 1885, when the first true internal combustion engine car is considered to have been built.

At the Berlin Motor Show in October 1926, the new Mercedes-Benz 300 K 12/55 PS was presented, developed under the direction of the company’s chief engineer Ferdinand Porsche. Among the body styles available was a four-door “Pullman Limousine.” Its 2,988 cc side-valve inline-six engine produced 55 hp, and it featured a four-speed gearbox and mechanical brakes on all four wheels. Today, this model is identified by the internal code W03 and was produced between 1926 and 1927.

The Mercedes-Benz 320 Mannheim 12/55 PS, with the internal code W04, was introduced in 1928. It was primarily distinguished by a larger engine of 3,131 cc, although the stated output remained 55 hp. A total of 202 units of the W04 are believed to have been produced.
