Description
This Duett is truly unique, with a genuine, unaltered, and charming past. It remains in unrestored original condition, preserved exactly as it appeared with its first owner, shopkeeper Nygren. When Nygren’s Grocery Store closed in 1982, the car was put away in a garage, where it remained untouched until 2002, when it was sold at an estate auction. The buyer carried out a technical inspection but kept the patinated condition intact. The car had to be re-registered, as it had dropped out of the vehicle registry during its years of inactivity.
Since returning to the road, it has been displayed at various car meets, always attracting great attention. According to the vehicle registry, there have been seven registered owners, though in practice it was primarily used by Nygren until 1982. Since being re-registered, it has covered around 7,000 km in the past 20 years. The current odometer reading is 73,000 km, though this cannot be guaranteed — it is possible that the odometer has rolled over once, making the true figure 173,000 km. In that case, the car would have averaged about 6,900 km per year during its service with Nygren.
The current owner lacks suitable storage for the car — it should ideally be kept in a heated garage during the winter — and has therefore decided to pass it on to the next enthusiast.
Included with the car are a spare wheel, a single ignition key, and an unopened tin of Kalas Coffee. A display sign detailing the car’s history is also included.

Condition
-
Mechanical condition
Equipped with the durable B16 engine — a four-cylinder, 1.6-litre unit with a stated output of 60 hp. Three-speed gearbox with a non-synchronised first gear. 6-volt electrical system. A little sluggish to start after standing unused for a few weeks, but once the fuel pump delivered petrol to the carburettor, it started nicely. Ran as expected for the model and was surprisingly stable on the road, considering the cross-ply tyres are very old and show cracks. A tyre replacement is recommended before undertaking longer trips. Under hard braking, the car pulls strongly to the left. We noted that the left front wheel brakes before the right front wheel, so a brake overhaul is required. We suspect new wheel cylinders and brake shoes may be needed, although the exact measures required are not confirmed.
-
Interior condition
The interior has survived surprisingly well for an old delivery vehicle, showing that the car has been well cared for. The headliner is in very good condition, with only minor stains and a few small holes. The driver’s seat upholstery is worn with several holes, while the passenger seat is in better condition — see photos. The original rubber floor mat has become hard and brittle. The dashboard looks almost new. In the rear cargo area, everything remains intact from when the car served as a delivery vehicle. Signs of older metal repairs can be seen around the inner wheel arches.
-
Exterior condition
Patinated exterior with the original 1958 paintwork and advertising text preserved. It shows touch-ups, scratches, minor damage, and age-related wear. Over the years, rust repairs have been carried out on the floor and around the rear inner wheel arches, mostly during the car’s time in service. These are very period-typical and functional repairs, with visible seams at the inner arches — just as it was done back then. See photos. All of this forms part of the car’s history and authenticity. Worn windscreen. Underside in good condition, although not inspected on a lift. The underside has been rustproofed/oil-treated.
-
General condition
This vehicle, with its fascinating history, is part of Sweden’s rolling cultural heritage. We hope it will find a buyer who will preserve its unique patinated condition for the future.

Facts about the model
Nygren’s and Svensson’s Grocery Store opened in 1904 at Stora Torget in Alingsås and was run until 1922 by Claes Nygren and his brother-in-law, Nathan Svensson. When Claes became the sole owner in 1922, the shop changed its name to Nygren’s Grocery Store and moved to Kungsgatan 28, where it remained until 1982. During this period, the business had a branch in Västra Bodarne, which opened in 1918 and closed in the 1970s. Under the name Claes Nygren’s Delicacies, the shop became known for its own coffee blend, “Claes Nygren’s Kalas Coffee.” It was also the first in Alingsås to introduce self-service with shopping trolleys.
Alingsås Museum has created an exhibition dedicated to Nygren’s store and Nygren’s House in Alingsås. Nygren’s House is now protected as a listed building. Today, Nygren’s Café operates in the old warehouse building of Nygren’s House, its name serving as a tribute to the shopkeeper and his historic trading premises.
The warehouse building where the café is located has been carefully restored, and the exposed brick walls, velvet sofas, and crystal chandeliers create a delightful atmosphere. Whether they serve Kalas Coffee according to shopkeeper Nygren’s original recipe, we do not know — but perhaps it’s a tip for the future.
