Facts about the model

The Saab 93 GT750 (Gran Turismo 750) was a car from Saab produced between 1958 and 1960. The GT750 was a sportier version of the Saab 93, primarily intended for the U.S. market. It featured the same body as the 93 but with a different interior and a more powerful engine. When the 93 ceased production in 1960, the GT750 continued with the body from the Saab 96 and a four-speed transmission. Production continued until 1962, when the model received various updates, including the larger 841 cc engine from the 96, front disc brakes, and a new name. In countries like the UK and Sweden, it was called the Saab Sport. In the U.S., it was known as the ‘GT 850 Monte Carlo’ (named after its successes in the Monte Carlo Rally).

A notable feature of the 96 Sport was its separate lubrication system, meaning that the two-stroke oil was stored in a separate tank and dosed automatically, rather than being mixed in the fuel tank by the driver (as in the standard model).

The GT750 was tuned to 50 horsepower (37 kW) SAE. There was also a performance kit available that boosted the engine to 57 horsepower (41 kW) SAE. The engine delivered its best power at high revs, from 3400 to 5000 rpm. The transmission had three gears. With the performance kit installed, the engine became more sensitive to low revs, making city driving challenging due to issues such as fouled spark plugs.

Road & Track praised the car’s smooth operation and steering, as well as its high level of equipment. The GT750 was also equipped with a “Halda Speedpilot,” an analog trip meter used by co-drivers during rally racing.
