"A nice PV56 in good condition both inside and out."

Description

This was Volvo's most expensive and luxurious model in 1939. It was built in only about 1,300 units, and there are not many preserved examples left today. This particular PV56 was a former "government vehicle" delivered to I 18 on Gotland in 1939. It was sold by the government in 1954 to a farmer on the island. At that time, the car was painted in military green, a color that remains in the engine compartment. It received a new coat in a wine-red color at some time during a previous owner's tenure. It still looks good, but in the photographs, the car is dusty and appears matte. According to statements, the Volvo was renovated by a previous owner and is in a drivable condition. Not much more is known about it, but the current owner has had the car for three years, and during this time, the brakes have been overhauled, and the carburetor has been replaced with a later Volvo carburetor. The original carburetor comes with the car, see picture. Radiator hoses have also been replaced. The door lock function does not work, and a hubcap has disappeared over the years. The car is inspected and drivable but would benefit from an overhaul and service.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

At the time of the photo shoot, the car was not driven on the road due to weather conditions. The car is easy to start. The Volvo was last used in the summer of 2023. The door lock function does not work.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in good condition, especially the seats and the back seat. The floor mat in the passenger seat's footwell is discolored. The headliner is clean and intact but the fabric is a bit slack. Surface rust in the trunk, probably due to standing water.

  • Exterior condition

Older repaint in good condition. The bumpers are in a poorer, slightly dented condition. The rubber seals on the lower edges of the doors are somewhat loose.

  • General condition

The Volvo is inspected, and with a little maintenance and service, it will be a usable classic in good condition.

Facts about the model

Volvo PV 56 1938–1945

Volvo PV 53-56 replaced the earlier PV 51-52 series. The car was modernized with softer suspension, improved steering, new interior, and instrument panel. Externally, the car received a more modern front than its predecessor. PV 53 (Standard) and PV55 (Deluxe) lacked an extended luggage compartment. PV54 (Standard) and PV56 (Deluxe) featured an extended luggage compartment.

Production numbers from 1938 to 1945 were as follows:

PV53: 1,204 units
PV54: 814 units
PV55: 286 units
PV56: 1,321 units
During the war, Volvo developed its own wood gas generator which was mounted on the back of the car with a support wheel, meaning it did not occupy the luggage compartment. This allowed for fuel storage without the need for a roof rack. The unit was nicknamed “the afterthought.” During the war, these cars were primarily delivered to the Armed Forces and the Police.
