"Renovated over 40+ years ago before spending around 30+ years on display in a museum and the past 7 years in a private collection. Originally sold new in Norway before later being imported into Sweden."

Description

This early Type 1 was sold new and renovated in Norway before being imported to Sweden in late 1989. It was purchased by Ulf Larsson and E.G. Larsson Bil AB (now Toveks Bil) to become part of the Volkswagen museum that Ulf built into one of the largest private VW collections in Scandinavia, comprising around 65 vehicles. The entire collection was later sold to Bengt Holmgren, who continued to expand the museum.

In 2018, the museum collection was dispersed, giving Ulf the opportunity to buy back this 1949 Beetle. As a result, the car has effectively had only two owners since 1990. It has recently undergone a comprehensive mechanical inspection and now starts and runs very well.

The car is in excellent condition both inside and out. Renovated to original specification during the 1980s, the body is straight and well presented throughout. The interior has been retrimmed in period-correct fabric matching the original design, including the seats and door panels. As expected for such an early Type 1, it rides on correct period cross-ply tyres.

There are no major faults to report. The paint is slightly thick in a few areas, some paint crack on the roof there are a handful of minor scratches, dust inclusions, and small on the front wing. The rubber seals show some age-related cracking.

Unlike Swedish-market cars, which were generally the better-equipped export models, Norwegian-market Beetles were supplied in a more basic specification with fewer chrome details.

Engine number: 10145155.

(The engine was replaced many years ago with a correct-type unit. The original engine fitted to this 1949 chassis, no. 10114874, carried engine number 10146172.)

The car is powered by the original-style 1,131 cc, 25 hp air-cooled flat-four engine, paired with a 4-speed non-synchromesh gearbox.

The odometer currently reads 26,130 km (2,613 Swedish mil). Unfortunately, this mileage cannot be verified, although the car has seen very little use since 1989.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Service and reviewed last year by a VW/Porsche speclaist in Borås and then drove to to Viared were it now on display at Johns Garage. We didnt start or test the car during the documentation, Enginebay is clean and tidy and has a nice set if black wheeland hubs and older slight dry cross-ply tyres.

  • Interior condition

Interior still presents beautifully, despite being reupholstered nearly 40 years ago. The seats, door cards, panels, and headliner remain in very good condition with no significant damage. Only slight wear is visible on the right-hand edge behind the rear seat.

  • Exterior condition

Highly presentable throughout thanks to spending more than 35 years as a museum and display car. The bodywork is straight, with just one small 2 cm dent on the front right wing and no other noticeable damage. There are no visible rust issues to the body or underbody. The paintwork retains a deep, glossy finish with only a few minor blemishes, while a couple of small paint cracks are visible on the left-hand side of the roof.

  • General condition

Any Volkswagen enthusiast or collector would love to own this car. Pre-1950 Beetles rarely come onto the market, and finding one in this condition is even rarer.

Facts about the model

1949 was a year of major model changes for Volkswagen. Some of the updates included hubcaps with smaller emblems, a new interior rear-view mirror and two-spoke steering wheel, a revised clutch plate, a full rubber floor covering, and improved engine cylinders cast with a higher phosphorus content.

Volkswagen's history can be traced back to 1898, when Ferdinand Porsche took his first job with automobile manufacturer Jacob Lohner and Co in Vienna.

In 1934, Porsche presented his concept and sketches for a German "people's car" to the German government, marking the starting point for what would become the world's most-produced car.

The vision was for a small car with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and seating for four people. It also had to be affordable to buy and maintain, capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) and able to tackle gradients of around 30 percent.

In 1938, the foundations of the Volkswagenwerk factory were laid just outside Hanover, but it was not until 1946 that car production began in earnest.

Sweden was one of the first countries to receive Volkswagen exports on a larger scale, and the first cars arrived in 1948. On 10 June 1948, Volkswagen signed an agreement with Swedish importer Scania-Vabis. A total of 55 cars arrived in Sweden during that first year, including four prototype vehicles that underwent extensive testing. The remaining cars were delivered the following year, when a further 375 examples were imported.
