"Owned by a Volvo enthusiast for the past 17 years, this 1800 ES has been well maintained, regularly enjoyed during the summer and always stored in a warm garage. Inspection exempt and ready to enjoy."

Description

Originally sold new in the USA, where approximately 80% of all Volvo 1800 ES models were delivered, this example spent its early life in the state of New York before being imported and registered in Sweden in 1989. It has had just three owners in Sweden, with the first owning it for 16 years, the second for five years, and the current Volvo enthusiast for the past 17 years.

A few years after purchasing the car, the first owner had bodywork carried out, including the replacement of both rear quarter panels and welding repairs to the underbody. Around 2010, the engine was refreshed with the cylinder head being resurfaced, worn components replaced, and a new water pump installed.

More recent work includes new shock absorbers all round, the suspension lowered approximately 30 mm with Lesjöfors springs, renewed brake discs and brake lines, and the fitment of a 4.10:1 rear axle ratio, providing more relaxed cruising at higher road speeds. The car is also equipped with a stainless steel exhaust system manufactured by Raka Rör.

Driven and enjoyed every summer, the car has never been left standing for long periods. It has been maintained regardless of cost, with worn components replaced as required by the owner and Volvo specialists.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and only needs a few minutes to warm up before driving. The engine runs smoothly and steadily, while the manual gearbox shifts well with a fully functioning overdrive. The car offers balanced road manners, solid brakes and inspires confidence behind the wheel.

Fitted with a modern Bluetooth stereo and discreet bass speakers behind the seats. The car is fitted with a set of original Volvo Dunlop alloy wheels. A matching set of original steel wheels complete with hubcaps is also included.

Inspection exempt and ready to be driven home and enjoyed.

  • Interior condition

Interior is in good, usable condition. The black leather seats show general age-related wear, with a few small holes in the driver's seat, while the rear seats remain in good condition. The carpets, door cards, trim panels, and headliner are all well preserved, with only a small tear on the lower edge of the passenger-side trim panel. The original dashboard retains its factory gauges, although the vinyl is cracked and lifting around the instrument binnacle. The sun visors show some age-related swelling. The original radio is included, while a more modern stereo system has been fitted and is in working order. The boot is also clean and neatly carpeted.

  • Exterior condition

The car presents well with straight bodywork and panels. Apart from a small, soft dent on the upper right-hand side of the bonnet, which is barely noticeable and easily repaired, there is no other significant damage. Rust is limited to a small area along the inside upper edge of the driver's door (see photos), while the underbody appears clean and free from any obvious structural corrosion.

The paintwork is bright and presentable, although the roof has a wavy finish caused by a previous undercoat issue. According to the owner, this has been present since he purchased the car and has not worsened. There are a few touch-ups around the bonnet and some small dents in the side chrome trim. Overall, the chrome and brightwork remain in good condition.

  • General condition

The owner has kept the car in excellent usable condition and has thoroughly enjoyed it as a summer classic over the years. It has consistently received excellent inspection results, with several "5-star" reports. The cosmetic imperfections can easily be addressed over time, but nothing requires urgent attention, allowing the next owner to simply drive and enjoy the car as it is.
