"For the 1974 model year, the Beetle S received the upgraded 1.6-litre engine producing 50 hp, together with independent rear suspension (IRS) and front disc brakes. These improvements made it a notably more comfortable, refined, and dependable car for everyday use.

This well-equipped example has been restored by a dedicated Volkswagen enthusiast who also enjoyed a long professional career working with the marque. A charming and enjoyable classic, it offers an authentic Beetle driving experience with the benefit of thoughtful ownership and desirable factory equipment. Having seen only limited use in recent years, a general mechanical inspection and recommissioning of minor details is recommended before regular driving."

Description

This Beetle was first registered for road use on 29 April 1974 and has had a total of six owners. The current owner, who spent 40 years as a workshop foreman at Volkswagen in Stockholm, acquired the car in July 2002 with the intention of restoring it as a retirement project.

Working from his garage on Värmdö, where the car remains today, the body was separated from the floorpan for a comprehensive restoration. The body was transported to the Volkswagen workshop in Stockholm, where it underwent careful preparation before being repainted in its original Maya Brown Metallic finish. The floorpan was repaired where necessary and thoroughly rustproofed, including treatment with red lead primer.

The braking system was completely overhauled using genuine Volkswagen components, including new calipers and wheel cylinders, discs, brake shoes, and brake lines. The engine also received a mechanical inspection and service. The original upholstery was retained, while the headliner was replaced and the sunroof cables renewed.

The odometer currently reads 31,460 km (3,146 Swedish mil), although it is believed to have rolled over once, making the actual mileage approximately 131,460 km.

In recent years the car has seen only limited use, although the owner's son has started and driven it on occasional outings each year to keep it in running order.

Included with the car are various original owner's manuals, period documentation, and historic inspection records. A spare gearbox and a new brake caliper are also included in the sale.

The car has a valid roadworthiness inspection and is ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine started easily and ran smoothly throughout the inspection. During a short test drive on quiet country roads and through a residential area, the steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes all performed as expected. However, as the car has seen only limited use in recent years, a general mechanical inspection and recommissioning are recommended before regular driving.

  • Interior condition

Since the restoration some 20 years ago, the seats have been protected by custom-fitted seat covers. One of the covers was carefully lifted during the inspection, revealing what appears to be the original corduroy upholstery in very well-preserved condition.

The door cards and interior trim panels are in good condition, complemented by a clean headliner and well-kept carpets. The steering wheel, switchgear, and dashboard all present well, while the electrical equipment and instruments appear to function correctly. The factory sunroof is weather-tight and operates smoothly by hand.

  • Exterior condition

The car was repainted in its original factory colour at Volkswagen in Stockholm just over 20 years ago. The finish remains in good overall condition, showing only minor signs of age, including an isolated paint blister and the expected light wear consistent with careful enthusiast ownership and modest use.

The chrome trim, mouldings, badges, and lighting components are all presented to a similar standard. The desirable Big alloy wheels are in good condition and are fitted with tyres that have good remaining tread, although their age is unknown.

Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are clean and well presented. The functionality of the Eberspächer auxiliary heater could not be verified during the inspection.

Facts about the model

The later versions of the Volkswagen Type 1 evolved into more powerful, more practical, and safer cars, featuring larger luggage compartments and period upgrades such as integrated head restraints. For the 1971 model year, Volkswagen introduced the 1302 S, equipped with the 1.6-litre 50 hp engine. It also received MacPherson strut front suspension, which increased front luggage capacity, together with independent rear suspension (IRS). These engineering improvements significantly enhanced both ride comfort and handling.

For 1973, the model was further updated and became the 1303 S. It featured an all-new dashboard, a curved panoramic windscreen, larger rear lights, and an external fuel filler flap with a recessed finger grip.

The 1303 S was the final Beetle saloon to be built in Germany, with production running from 1973 to 1975 (the Cabriolet remained in production until 1978). Today, it is widely regarded as the most refined, safest, and best-driving version of the classic Beetle, combining the model's timeless character with its highest level of everyday usability.
