Description
Importantly, the known oil pump issue common to SM/Maserati engines was addressed earlier, resolving a critical concern for long-term reliability.
Inspection records show that the current owner regularly used the car during his ownership, with technical inspections recorded in 2011, 2013, 2015, and most recently in 2021—after which the car became inspection-exempt in Sweden. The odometer currently reads 23,680 km. While this cannot be verified as original mileage, an earlier record from 2011 showed 19,270 km, making it likely the true mileage is 123,680 km.
Today, the car presents very well overall. The Aqua Blue paint still shows nicely, and the black leather interior remains in good condition. There are no significant rust issues—just minor blisters around the lower door edges. The underbody is solid and clean. It has always been garage kept and never winter driven, but as it hasn’t seen much recent use, a full service and mechanical review are recommended.
The hydraulic system functions correctly, and the car runs, shifts gears, and brakes well. The exhaust has a slight leak, and the electric windows are currently inoperative (though they can be raised manually). The air conditioning has not been tested.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The car will need a proper service and mechanical review, but it starts easily and runs better once warmed up. There are no unusual noises—just a slight exhaust leak. During test driving, it performed fine, with smooth gear changes and sharp, responsive brakes. All hydraulic functions operate correctly in every position, and the engine bay is clean, tidy, and shows signs of being well maintained. The wheels are in good condition, fitted with older but still usable tires. As a bonus, the car is both road tax and inspection exempt forever.
-
Interior condition
interior is clean and well-kept, with nice black leather seats showing no damage—just a small mark and light scratch on the driver’s seat. Door cards, interior panels, headliner, and carpets are all in good condition. The dashboard is undamaged and complete, with all gauges functioning properly and no warning lights displayed while driving. The electric windows are currently not working, likely due to an electrical issue, though they can be raised manually using the hand winder. The air conditioning has not been tested. An aftermarket LED alarm system has been installed, and the boot is tidy with the original toolkit and spare wheel present.
-
Exterior condition
Bodywork is straight with no dents or major rust issues. As mentioned, there are small blisters around the lower door edges and one on the rear wing (see pictures). The paint is shiny and presents well overall, with only minor marks and scratches, plus a small paint chip and crack on the bonnet. The windscreen has a stone chip and a light wiper scratch, and there’s some creasing in the paint around the SM chrome badge. The underbody is tidy with signs of older repairs but no structural rust concerns. The chrome trim all around is bright and in good condition. There’s a small scuff on the rubber around the front bumper and a minor crack in the plastic center lens at the rear.
-
General condition
There are a few minor things to address, but the car still presents a good overall impression.

Facts about the model
Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on March 11, 1970, the Citroën SM was Citroën’s bold leap into the world of high-performance grand tourers. A fusion of cutting-edge French engineering and Italian power, the SM was a technological marvel of its time.
Under the hood sat a 90-degree Maserati V6 engine with a displacement of 2670 cc. Initially fed by three Weber carburetors, the SM switched to fuel injection in 1973 for better performance and efficiency.
One of its standout features was the Diravi power steering system—speed-sensitive, self-centering, and requiring only minimal input from the driver. At low speeds, it offered feather-light control for effortless maneuvering, while at higher speeds, assistance decreased for improved stability.
Buyers could opt for either a five-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic. The sleek, aerodynamic bodies were built by Chausson just outside Paris.
Despite its brilliance, the SM’s production was short-lived. Hit hard by the 1973 oil crisis and the financial troubles at Citroën, production ceased in 1975 after just under 13,000 units were built.
Today, the Citroën SM remains one of the most iconic and innovative vehicles of the 1970s—a cult classic admired for its avant-garde design, luxury, and unmatched ride comfort.
