"A mechanically well-maintained PV that is also neat and tidy both on the outside and inside."

Description

A Volvo PV 544 that has received several popular accessories: white wall tires, spotlight, extra lights, and a sun shade – what is often called a gangster cap. Since the odometer resets to zero at 10,000 miles, it is not possible to say exactly how far this car has traveled. Today the odometer reads 9,192 miles, and perhaps some details such as the well-maintained interior suggest that this is indeed the true mileage. The Volvo is well maintained and a large number of workshop receipts show what a previous owner has had serviced. Among other things, the engine, front axle, and brakes have been renovated. It recently received new engine oil and a general lubrication. A couple of years ago, it received a new rear muffler. An instruction manual is available, but not a service book. The current owner has had the car for five years and, with the right of age, is now reducing his car collection. A set of keys is included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine starts easily and runs well. No abnormal noises could be heard from the chassis or engine during the test drive. The gearbox also functions well, but the reverse gear can sometimes be slightly difficult to engage. It is equipped with a period-appropriate radio that works. The cabin fan did not function at the time of documentation, and one of the two fog lights did not illuminate.

  • Interior condition

Neat interior that appears to be largely original from 1961. The upholstery is in good condition, however the driver's seat has a small tear in the vinyl on the right side of the backrest – see photo. The panel around the instruments has some cracks. The headliner and door panels are in good condition, but the inside of the driver's door is somewhat soiled around the handle.

  • Exterior condition

A PV that looks good in bodywork and chrome. The front has had some repairs done after stone damage, and on the front and rear fenders on the right side there are a couple of larger repairs that are somewhat roughly painted. The bumpers and grille are in good condition, but both headlights have rust damage on the chrome. The side moldings have the occasional damage.

  • General condition

The B18 engine and 12-volt electrical system – the innovations that came with the C-series in 1961 – make this a more practical veteran car compared to older Volvo PV models. This is also a car in pleasant condition both on the outside and in the cabin.

Facts about the model

In 1961, 17 years had passed since the PV 444 was presented at Volvo's exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall in Stockholm. The PV 444 had been renamed PV 544 in 1958, when the model received, among other things, a full windshield and a larger rear window. Despite all the years the model had behind it in 1961, it now got new life – again! With the C-series, the PV 544 received the new B18 engine. It was available as the B18A with 75 hp SAE, while the sports model had the B18D with 90 hp SAE. The B18 engine had first been launched in the P1800, and now the Amazon and PV 544 also received the completely newly designed engine. The engine displacement was larger, and the B18 had a five-bearing crankshaft and a more efficient cylinder head. Other important innovations in the C-series included a new steering system that provided a tighter turning radius and a 12-volt electrical system. That it was the new PV could be seen in a new grille with more open bars as well as a B18 emblem in the grille and on the tailgate. On October 20, 1965, the last PV 544s were manufactured, and the last car produced became number 440,000.
