"Is it a complete and thorough restoration or just a mechanical overhaul? The body appears to be in such good condition that both options are possible."

Description

The car was purchased new by the current owner's grandfather in 1953 and was used until the early seventies when it was put aside with the intention of eventually restoring it. This intention was held by the current owner's father, but it never came to fruition. The desire was there, but there wasn't enough time. The third generation, which is the current owner, also states that they don't have the time or the knowledge to undertake such a project. There is a registration plate from the older registry, which allows for a search in the National Archives and, therefore, documentation for an approved authenticity check.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Everything is complete, the car has been stored in a barn since the beginning of the seventies and has not been started since then. We have not been able to check whether the engine is running.

  • Interior condition

The interior, door panels, and ceiling seem to have survived well, and the front seat cushions have some kind of covering. The front windshield is partially shattered.

  • Exterior condition

Paint in a normal, dull and rough barn condition after long storage. The doors have a good fit but are naturally sluggish in movement. It was difficult to determine the condition underneath, but the car has been stored in a dry area for all these years and the body feels sturdy in the metal.

  • General condition

Proud and complete object in a sensible and good condition with a nice history and opportunities for thorough research with the older registration certificate and the current owner's close knowledge.

Facts about the model

Mercedes-Benz 220 was produced between July 1951 and August 1955. The company had limited resources for product development after World War II, and after introducing the 170 S model, which was largely based on pre-war technology, they focused on the larger 300 model. However, they also worked on a new mid-size car, the model that would later become the 180 and 220 during the 1950s. The engine for the latter, a small inline-six engine with an overhead camshaft, was ready long before the rest of the car, and Mercedes decided to take advantage of this by launching an interim model while waiting for the new car. The W187 was quickly created by fitting the modern engine into the outdated 170 S model. To accommodate the larger engine, the car was equipped with a new front end with integrated headlights. The exclusive two-door models were now sold exclusively with the new engine. These continued to be produced for just over a year after the sedan was replaced by the new W180 220 in May 1954. During this final year of production, a coupe model was also built, with only 85 units produced.
