"A majestic American automobile from the 1930s that stirs emotions."

Description

This is far more than an ordinary restoration. It is craftsmanship carried out with an almost uncompromising level of perfection. The attention to detail is remarkable. I thought I was alone in sending even screws and nuts away for blasting and surface treatment — apparently not. There are others willing to go just as far in pursuit of perfection. Nothing here has been left to chance, and no shortcuts have been taken. This beautiful Buick was restored to its current condition by Hans Emrén at Auto Craft in Vikarbyn, and the result speaks for itself.

This particular Century Sport Coupé was delivered new in Örebro in 1939. According to its history, the first owner struggled to find love and was advised by friends to buy a truly stylish car — surely that would change his luck. Whether the advice worked, nobody knows today, but the Buick certainly went on to live a colorful life. During the 1950s, it was owned by a well-known racing boat driver who towed his two-ton competition boat around the country behind the Buick. To gain even more performance, four carburetors were installed on the long straight-eight engine, making the car even more spectacular.

In 1987, the car was purchased in Borås by Sven Johansson of Malung. At the time, it had been off the road since 1969, yet the car remained almost completely rust-free. A comprehensive restoration then began, with Hans Emrén at Auto Craft in Vikarbyn rebuilding the car from the ground up. The interior was sourced from the United States, while the dashboard received its beautiful original-style woodgraining from Christofer “Woodman” Willans. When the work was completed in 1993, the Buick had regained the same elegance and presence it possessed when it first left the factory in 1939.

Since September 2024, the Buick has formed part of the current owner’s collection of cars and motorcycles. Today it stands as a gleaming piece of American automotive history — a reminder of an era when speed, style, and engineering went hand in hand. Despite its exceptional condition, it is still enjoyed on the road during fine summer days. The car has also recently received new tires, ready for many more miles in the sunshine.

For those interested, an extensive feature on this very car was published in Nostalgia magazine, issue no. 1, May–June 1993.

Facts about the model

The 1939 Buick Series 60 Century Model 66S Sport Coupe was a high-performance Art Deco classic often referred to as “the banker’s hot rod.” The nickname came from the fact that the car combined Buick’s lighter Special body with a powerful 5.2-liter Dynaflash inline-eight producing 141 horsepower, giving it a top speed of more than 160 km/h — highly impressive for its era.

Many regard the Century as an early predecessor to the muscle car thanks to its strong power-to-weight ratio, shorter wheelbase, and advanced suspension featuring coil springs all around. It was also equipped with a 3-speed manual gearbox and hydraulic drum brakes.

In terms of design, the 1939 model offered a modern and elegant appearance with a streamlined grille, teardrop-shaped headlights, and a luxurious interior. The Sport Coupe seated four passengers and could be fitted with fold-down rear “opera seats.”

Today, the limited production numbers and strong performance characteristics make the 1939 Buick Century a highly sought-after collector’s car among enthusiasts worldwide.
