"Who will become the next custodian of what is essentially a newly built PV Sport?"

Description

The car was delivered new in the autumn of 1964 to its first owner, most likely in the Östergötland region of Sweden. The chassis number was relocated by the Swedish Vehicle Inspection authority during an inspection in Borås in 1968. The exact reason is unclear, though the change is documented in the paperwork.

The current owners are two retired and passionate Volvo enthusiasts who spend part of their free time restoring suitable examples of the PV, P1800, and Amazon models. Their skills complement each other well — one focuses primarily on the mechanical side, while the other specializes more in bodywork and sheet metal.

For them, restorations are meant to be enjoyable, and they never rush the process. The work takes as long as it needs to. The time invested in these projects is viewed as rewarding leisure time rather than something measurable in money, which is how they preserve the joy in what they do.

The previous red PV Sport restored by these two gentlemen was sold through Bilweb Auctions AB in 2022 for the record price of SEK 605,000.

The car will be displayed at the Gothenburg Classic Car Weekend at Lindholmen in Gothenburg on May 30–31. Its most recent — and final — approved registration and inspection was completed very recently, on 2026-05-21. The odometer has not been reset, although arguably it should have been.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The B18D engine has been upgraded to produce approximately 135 horsepower. The cylinder head has been converted for unleaded fuel, milled to 87 mm, and fitted with new valve guides along with B20 intake valves measuring Ø42 mm. The engine block has been measured and honed, and fitted with new piston rings. The crankshaft remains original but has received new main and connecting rod bearings. The crankshaft seals have been converted to modern lip seals. A new K-profile camshaft has been installed together with new lifters and inspected bearings. New camshaft gears have been fitted, including a fiber gear on the shaft. A new B20 oil pump has been installed.

The original SU carburetors have been rebuilt and fitted with KD needles. The exhaust manifold features dual outlets and is connected to a 2-inch sport exhaust system. A new diaphragm clutch has been fitted. The gearbox has been rebuilt with new gaskets and seals. The driveshaft has received a new center support bearing and all new universal joints. The rear axle has been measured and inspected and features a 4.10:1 final drive ratio. The radiator has been refurbished with a new core assembly.

All components in the front and rear suspension have been sandblasted and repainted. New kingpins, shock absorbers, bushings, seals, and steering rods have been installed. The front wheel bearings have been inspected, repacked with grease, and fitted with new seals. The rear suspension has received new bushings, bump stops, rebound straps, and GR2 gas shock absorbers.

  • Interior condition

Virtually everything is new. The headliner, textile trim around the door openings, dashboard padding, and all cardboard trim panels and door panels have been replaced. The front and rear seat upholstery is new, as are the gray rubber floor mats, the luggage compartment textile mat, and the trunk liner panels. Front seat inertia-reel seatbelts have been installed, along with a new heater unit, heater core, heater valve, and all related hoses.

  • Exterior condition

The body has been repaired where necessary for rust, sandblasted, and refinished in its original Cherry Red 46 color. Several new sheet metal sections have been fitted, including three new fenders. Much else is also new: insulation, chrome bumpers and grille surround, emblems, all rubber seals and guide strips in the doors and lids, rubber seals and decorative trim around the front and rear windows, as well as a windshield with a green-tinted sunstrip at the top. Exterior rear-view mirrors have also been fitted.

  • General condition

An impressively well-executed restoration, carried out methodically with knowledge, experience, and an understanding that taking one’s time with care and consideration creates a very special quality in restoration work.

Facts about the model

The first Sport model was introduced in 1958, shortly after the launch of the PV 544. The more powerful engine, featuring among other things twin carburetors, had originally been intended exclusively for the U.S. market. However, by the end of 1958 it became clear that it could also be successfully sold on the domestic market without increasing import duties in the United States.

The first Sport versions sold were equipped with the 85-horsepower B16B engine, but in August 1961 it was replaced by the new five-bearing B18 engine. The PV 544 Sport then received the 90-horsepower B18D engine. In August 1965, output for the Sport version was increased to 95 horsepower, and only a few months later Volvo announced that production of the model would end in late October 1965.

As a result, the PV 544 from the final G-series, model year 1966, was produced only during the period from August to October 1965. The very last PV ever built was a black 544 Sport, which rolled directly off the production line and into the museum on October 20, 1965.
