Buick Centurion Cabriolet 7,5 — 1973

With only 5,739 examples produced, this is the rarest Buick of the 1973 model year. A fine representative of the early 1970s American flair embodied in what was known as the ‘personal luxury car.’

"A pleasant and uncommon car presented in appealing overall condition."

Description

Imported to Sweden in 2017 and owned by the same family since 2018. Earlier history is unknown, but the car appears to be largely unrestored. It has been repainted at some point and partially refurbished, but overall there is no evidence of any major work having been carried out on the body or elsewhere.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine runs smoothly and quietly, and the automatic transmission shifts well, although the kickdown response feels somewhat slow. A well-equipped car featuring air conditioning (currently not functioning) and an original 8-track stereo (untested). Power windows, gauges, and other equipment are functional. The brake warning light takes some time to go out after start-up. The power steering is light, and the car drives and behaves as expected on the road without any notable issues.

  • Interior condition

The dashboard, steering wheel, and related interior trim are free from damage and in very good condition, as are the door panels. The upholstery shows some wear where the seatbacks fold, but is otherwise intact and in good condition. The passenger seat backrest is in a slightly different shade, but otherwise everything appears exactly as it should on these cars. A bracket for a more modern audio system has been mounted beneath the dashboard, complete with wiring. The carpeting is in good condition and appears to have been replaced at some point in the past.

  • Exterior condition

The car has been repainted at least once, possibly more. A rear fender was refinished a few years ago with a very good result. Overall, the car presents well and is tidy, though the paint shows some minor imperfections such as unevenness, stone chips, occasional touch-ups, and traces of overspray on certain rubber trim and edges. The wheels are attractive, with some rust visible in the rim seams, while the outer rims and the rest of the wheels remain in very good condition. The chrome is generally good, with some patina visible on details at the rear. Some of the rubber seals are old and have developed surface cracking from age.

The convertible top was replaced a number of years ago and remains in very good condition with an excellent fit. It features a fixed rear window. The scissor-type top mechanism operates relatively smoothly and evenly when lowered.

There are some panel fitment issues, primarily at the front edge of the hood and around the trunk lid. This is most likely due to these panels having been removed at some point and subsequently refitted.

  • General condition

A handsome, well-presented, and uncommon car that makes a very strong overall impression. Comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped. In good condition throughout and perfectly suited to enjoyable, worry-free driving.

Facts about the model

The Buick Centurion was a short-lived model introduced in 1971 as the replacement for the Wildcat. It was positioned as a more luxurious and personal automobile. The Centurion was offered only as a hardtop sedan, hardtop coupe, and convertible.

Initially, it was available with the 455 cu in V8 in two different versions. For 1973, a 350 cu in V8 became the standard engine, while the 250-horsepower 455 cu in V8 remained available.

The 1973 model year was also the final year for the Centurion. At that time, it was the only convertible in Buick’s lineup and was succeeded in 1974 by the LeSabre Luxus.
