"A technically very interesting construction far ahead of its time."

Description

Projekt Norrsken was perhaps the most prominent build of the motorcycle magazine MCM. The idea was to create a modern and entirely Swedish street bike with performance that could rival a sport bike. The result was a technologically advanced construction with an innovative design, being a fairing-less sport bike with an upright riding position. This was before even Ducati introduced its first Monster model, which in many ways became an Italian Norrsken.

The project was completed in the early 1990s. The magazine conducted various tests and evaluations of the project and found, among other things, that they had succeeded in creating a rocket with 108 horsepower at the rear wheel and a dry weight of 125 kg.

Norrsken is a study and prototype exploring the vision of building modern Swedish street motorcycles. It is not intended to be used as a "regular" motorcycle, primarily due to the Folan engine weighing only 38 kilograms, which is essentially a racing engine that requires frequent servicing, extensive maintenance, and has limited lifespan between replacement of wear parts.

When Norrsken was put on display at the MCM editorial office after evaluations, the engine underwent an inspection (replacement of wear parts, etc.). It was in working condition when it was stored. After 30 years of storage (albeit at room temperature), it would require an inspection before any potential startup.

This motorcycle is a collector's item, not intended for everyday use. It represents a modern milestone in Swedish motorcycle culture that hopefully can be preserved for the future. A comprehensive seven-part article series was published in MCM, detailing the building process in great detail.

The motorcycle is designed with the best components available at the time, manufactured in Sweden. The main components consist of Folan's 60-degree V2 engine with four valves per cylinder, liquid-cooled, OHC, and a weight of only 38 kg including the starter motor and 6-speed gearbox. The exhaust system is made of titanium and carbon fiber.

URM's space-frame chromoly frame was used. The well-known ISR was involved in the build and manufactured many of the specially designed chassis parts. ISR's brakes were used, as well as their unique front fork. Leading suspension manufacturer Öhlins built dampers uniquely tailored to Norrsken's geometry and weights, etc.

The renowned custom painter Bosse Jensen did the final paint job. Various parts are included, as shown in the picture.
